Dover Library to host program on Tuscarawas County clay industry

As part of the America 250 celebration, the Dover Public Library will host Dana Martini of Superior Clay Corp. for a program on the history of the clay industry in Tuscarawas County.

The program will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 25 in the community room at the library.

Martini will share the story of two families, four generations and four factories. He will show images and discuss the McClave and Martini families, who owned and operated Buckeye Clay Co., Royal-Robinson Clay, H.K. Porter Clay and Evans Pipe-Superior Clay. He also will address the impact the clay industry has had on the local economy.

Martini graduated from Claymont High School and studied architecture and mechanical engineering at Kent State University. His family has a long tradition of working in the clay industry. Both of his grandfathers worked in the industry, as did his father and mother. Two of his children currently work at Superior Clay Corp.

Martini has been with Superior Clay Corp. for 47 years. He spent 20 years as a machinist-die maker and glaze technician. He was manager of custom products and quality control for more than 25 years. He currently is a designer and works in the technical service department.

Martini gives presentations to architects and masons about the manufacturing process and the company’s products.
