New Philadelphia’s boys and Tusky Valley’s girls each won district championships
Area schools sent dozens of athletes to regional meets with their performances last week. New Philadelphia’s boys and Tusky Valley’s girls each won district championships.
The following is a look at the top performers in district meets. The top four finishers in each district event earned automatic berths in the regional meets.
Division II Marietta District
New Philadelphia’s boys won the district title with 119 points. Dover finished fifth with 54.
The Quakers’ girls finished third with 74 points behind Miami Trace with 151 and Logan with 121. Dover placed sixth with 65.
Advancing to the Troy Regional for New Philadelphia’s boys were senior Marcuss Adelman, first in the 3,200; senior Wyatt Lendon, first in the 1,600; senior Cade Jones, first in pole vault; senior Caleb Carlisle, second in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200; senior Alec Adelman, second in the 1,600; junior Jaxson Rice and Mitchell Miller, second and third in high jump; sophomore Joel Lendon, third in shot put; junior Nolan Rosneck, third in the 110 hurdles; and senior Kyle Beaber, fourth in the 800.
Alec Adelman, Wyatt Lendon, Beaber and freshman Holden Rotunno won the 4x800 relay. Carlisle and fellow seniors Myles Tyson, Eric Harris and Jones finished second in the 4x100.
For New Philadelphia’s girls, advancing athletes were junior Kylie Smith, second in the 1,600 and 3,200; junior Mariel Alcantra, second in discus; freshman Khloe Sours, second in high jump; senior Amya Pica, third in the 100 hurdles; and sophomore Jillian Hanes, fourth in long jump.
Advancing for Dover’s boys were senior Justice Hughes, first in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles; sophomore Dante Clark, second in long jump; and senior Chase Daniel, third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600. Hughes, Clark, Dieter Weber and Braylon Little finished fourth in the 4x200 relay.
Dover’s girls were highlighted by freshman Maddie Minis, who won the shot put and placed fourth in discus. Also advancing were freshman Kenley Oswald, third in the 400, and junior Emmy Rodriguez, third in long jump. Oswald, senior Peyton Grafe, Rodriguez and freshman Avery Worst finished third in the 4x100 relay, while junior Ella Kitchen and sophomores Bethany Hutchison, Cassidy McGee and Charlee Metcalf finished fourth in the 4x800 relay.
Division III St. Clairsville District
Indian Valley had several athletes advance to the Muskingum University Regional. Leading the boys team was junior Carsen Hostetler, who won district titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Sophomore Beckett Swaldo won the pole vault.
Others advancing were senior Carter Neff, second in shot put; junior Nolan Pattaca, third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600; freshman Cohen Mathews, third in the 110 hurdles; sophomore TC Cannon, third in the 300 hurdles; and junior Zane Colvin, fourth in the 400.
Hostetler, fellow juniors Logan Burrier and Reese St. Clair, and senior Grady Kinsey placed third in the 4x100 relay and fourth in the 4x200 relay. Hostetler, Cannon, junior Caleb Shamp and junior Ettore Del Curto Bragado finished third in the 4x400 relay.
For Indian Valley’s girls, junior Gionna Miles, second in the 100 hurdles, and freshman Rowan Harshey, fourth in the 3,200, advanced. Miles, sophomores Auria McDaniels and Halle Klasnerer, and junior Alonna Allan finished fourth in the 4x100 relay. Harshey and classmates Jillian Welch, Same Wales and Bailey Herbert finished fourth in the 4x800 relay.
In the boys Division B standings, Indian Valley finished third with 104 points behind Minerva with 133 and River View with 106. Claymont finished eighth out of 10 teams with 28 points. Indian Valley’s girls finished 10th out of 17 teams with 36.75 points. Cambridge won with 77.
Claymont’s boys will send junior Brody Cameron, fourth in shot put, and sophomore Dorian Harris, fourth in long jump, to the regional meet.
Division IV Newcomerstown District
The Tusky Valley girls won the team title with 119 points. Claymont was runner-up with 81. Sandy Valley placed ninth with 28. Tusky Valley’s boys finished second with 86 points behind champion Fairless with 132. Newcomerstown finished 10th with 27 and Sandy Valley was 13th with 21.
For Tusky Valley’s girls, senior Savannah Ashton won the 100 and finished second in the 200 as she advanced to the Austintown Regional in four events. Senior Katie Armstrong won the pole vault, while sophomore Sara Whitlach was runner-up.
Sophomore Josie Eick finished second in the 800, one place ahead of senior teammate Sami Ward. Freshman Natalie Stokes placed second in the 3,200, sophomore Natalie Rennicker was third in the 1,600 and junior Natalie Woloch was third in the 300 hurdles.
Ashton, Woloch and juniors Leah Howard and Abeka Fouts won the 4x100 relay. Ward, Eick, Ashton and junior Hayden Huffman finished second in the 4x400 relay. Ward, Huffman, Eick and senior Trista Lieser won the 4x800 relay.
For Tusky Valley’s boys, senior Abe McElwee won the 400 and placed third in the 200. Junior Cade Conrad won the 800. Sophomore Graham Lewis won the pole vault. Junior Jake McDermott finished second in shot put and discus.
McElwee, Conrad and juniors Braden Miller and Ben Brantley won the 4x400 relay. Conrad, junior Logan Roth and sophomores Micah Rippel and Blake Markle placed fourth in the 4x800 relay.
Advancing for Newcomerstown’s boys were junior Ezra Norman, third in pole vault; senior Tanner Smith, fourth in the 100; senior Trenton Wright, fourth in the 400; and Smith, senior Dom Singer, junior Lucas Justice and sophomore JJ Justice, second in the 4x100 relay.
For Claymont’s girls, juniors Jadyn Sproul, first in discus and shot put, and Kali Wallace, first in the 3,200 and second in the 1,600, led the way. Freshman Whitnee Wallace finished second in the 200 and fourth in the 100.
Whitnee Wallace, senior Kenahdee Searcy, sophomore Elah Davis and freshman Promise Orr placed third in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Kali Wallace, junior Grace McPherson and freshmen Kelly Preston and Emma McPherson finished fourth in the 4x800 relay.
Division V Newcomerstown District
Newcomerstown’s girls finished runner-up to Shenandoah, which outscored the Trojans 94-88.5. Strasburg-Franklin placed fourth in the 17-team field with 73 points. Tuscarawas Central Catholic placed 14th with 10.
Heading to the Chillicothe Regional were junior Cameron Kuder and sophomore Samantha Kuder, who finished first and second in the 200 and second and fourth in the 100. They teamed with junior Solee Garland and sophomore Avilyn Hoover to win the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
Garland, junior Molly Seevers and freshmen Marlee Garland and Clara Allen placed third in the 4x400 relay. Solee Garland finished third in the 300 hurdles. Senior Magelynn Collins placed fourth in discus, while Seevers finished third in pole vault.
For Strasburg-Franklin, freshman Lydia Thomas won the 400 and long jump, while senior Kylie McKenzie won the 1,600 and 3,200. Thomas, McKenzie, senior Lyla Wiggs and freshman Mya Boylan won the 4x800 relay and finished second in the 4x400 relay. Boylan placed fourth in high jump.
Tuscarawas Central Catholic senior Elena Price won the 800.
Division V Nelsonville-York District
For Strasburg, senior Gage Moore, second in shot put and third in discus, and sophomore Nicholas Milburn, second in long jump, advanced.
Milburn, junior Micah McVay, sophomore Kasin Pryor and freshman Asher Mumba finished third in the 4x200 relay, while Milburn, McVay, sophomores Hudson McKenzie and freshman Braxton Goehring placed fourth in the 4x100 relay to also advance to the Chillicothe Regional.
For Tuscarawas Central Catholic, junior Nolan Pugh won the pole vault and sophomore Alex Mercier finished fourth in the 3,200.
Strasburg-Franklin placed eighth among 14 teams with 41 points. Tuscarawas Central Catholic finished 10th with 21.
Regional meets were scheduled to begin with Division II and IV preliminaries and some field events May 27. Finals are May 29. Divisions III and V will compete May 28 and 30.
The state meet will be June 6-7 for Division II, June 5-6 for Division III, and June 4-5 for Divisions IV and V.
