Area athletes advance to state track and field championships

Newcomerstown’s girls placed sixth in the Chillicothe Regional with 31.5 points

It’s been quite a year for New Philadelphia’s boys track team. The Quakers have one week left to put the icing on the cake.

The team qualified a large contingent for the state meet in Columbus this weekend. New Philadelphia’s boys finished as runners-up at the Troy Division II Regional.

Also at Troy, Dover’s girls placed ninth out of 32 scoring teams while the Tornado boys finished 11th out of 37. New Philadelphia’s girls placed 20th.

For New Philadelphia’s boys, heading to state were:

Senior Caleb Carlisle (third, 100-meter dash); seniors Wyatt Lendon and Alec Adelman (second and fourth, respectively, 1,600-meter run); senior Marcus Adelman (second, 3,200-meter run); junior Nolan Rosneck (third, 110-meter hurdles); seniors Myles Tyson, Eric Harris, Cade Jones and Caleb Carlisle (third, 4x100-meter relay); Lendon, Alec Adelman, senior Kyle Beaber and junior Kevin Smith (second, 4x800-meter relay); junior Jackson Rice and senior Mitchell Miller (third and fourth, respectively, high jump). Jones also placed sixth in the pole vault.

For the Quaker girls, junior Maricel Alcantra finished third in the discus to advance. Junior Kylie Smith fell just short of advancing, finishing sixth in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Automatic berths went to the top five in each event with at-large berths based on times statewide.

Dover senior Chase Daniel did not finish in the top five but qualified in a pair of events with a sixth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run and a seventh-place finish in the 1,600-meter run. Senior Justice Hughes also earned a trip to Columbus, finishing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles after posting the top time in the semifinals, and also placing fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. Sophomore Dante Clark placed fifth in the long jump to advance.

Freshman Maddie Minnis won the regional shot put title and was runner-up in the discus to earn a trip to Columbus for Dover’s girls.

In other regional action around the state last weekend:

Division III

At the New Concord Regional at Muskingum University, Indian Valley’s boys placed 15th out of 41 scoring teams. Junior Carden Hostetler advanced in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, winning the latter after finishing third in the 110-meter hurdles.

For the girls, sophomore Gionna Miles placed 10th in the 100-meter dash and freshman Rowan Harshey came in 11th in the 3,200-meter run for Indian Valley’s top finishes.

Sophomore long jumper Dorian Harris was Claymont’s top boys placer, finishing 14th. Junior shot putter Brody Cameron placed 15th.

Division IV

Tusky Valley’s girls came in third among 37 scoring teams at the Austintown Regional.

Claymont placed 17th, while Sandy Valley was 20th with 12 points. Tusky Valley’s boys finished sixth out of 41 scoring teams. Newcomerstown’s boys came in 24th, while Sandy Valley placed 39th.

Advancing for the Tusky Valley girls were senior Savannah Ashton (third, 200-meter dash; seventh, 100-meter dash); sophomore Josie Eick and senior Sami Ward (third and fourth, respectively, 800-meter run); senior Katie Armstrong and sophomore Sarah Whitlach (second and fourth, respectively, pole vault); and freshman Natalie Stokes (sixth, 3,200-meter run). Ward, senior Trista Lieser, junior Hayden Huffman and sophomore Natalie Rennicker won the 4x800-meter relay to advance.

For Tusky Valley’s boys, senior Abe McElwee won the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Graham Lewis won the pole vault. Junior Cade Conrad was runner-up in the 800-meter run. Junior Jake McDermott was runner-up in the shot put.

Freshman Taliana Tozzi won the high jump for Sandy Valley’s girls. Also qualifying was junior hurdler Sydney Hauenstein, who placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore Grafton Stout placed eighth in the boys pole vault but did not advance.

Senior Trenton Wright, with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, advanced for Newcomerstown’s boys, along with junior pole vaulter Ezra Norman, who came in fifth. Junior Kali Wallace, second in the 3,200-meter run and fifth in the 1,600-meter run, paced Claymont’s girls.

Division V

Newcomerstown’s girls placed sixth in the Chillicothe Regional with 31.5 points. Not far behind in 13th place was Strasburg-Franklin with 21. Tuscarawas Central Catholic placed 24th with 10.

Strasburg-Franklin’s boys scored four points to tie for 31st among 37 teams. Tuscarawas Central Catholic’s boys scored one point.

For Newcomerstown’s girls, sophomore Samantha Kuder placed eighth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Junior Cameron Kuder finished eighth in the 200-meter dash. The duo advanced with those finishes. Junior Solee Garland was runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles to move on. Junior Molly Seevers advanced in the pole vault with a seventh-place finish. Samantha Kuder, Cameron Kuder, Garland and sophomore Avilyn Hoover were runners-up in both the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays.

Freshman Lydia Thomas was runner-up in the 400-meter dash to advance. She also qualified with a third-place finish in the long jump and as part of the 4x800-meter relay with fellow freshman Mya Boylan and seniors Lyla Wiggs and Kylie McKenzie.

For Strasburg-Franklin’s boys, senior Gage Moore advanced with a fifth-place finish in the shot put.

Tuscarawas Central Catholic senior Elena Price kept her sights set on a state title in the 800-meter run, winning the regional championship. Junior pole vaulter Nolan Pugh was the top TCC boys finisher, placing eighth.
