Commencement is defined as a beginning and an ending
Waterford Players to stage first musical on expanded Dennison stage
The musical, first performed on Broadway in 1971, tells the story of the last week of Jesus, from Palm Sunday to the crucifixion
The Waterford Players’ production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” boasts a series of first.
This is the first musical put on by the group, which was formed in 2023. It is the first play ever directed in this area by Jonathan Jurado. And it is the first production ever held on the newly expanded stage on the third floor of the Dennison Municipal Building, 302 Grant St.
The show will run June 19-21. Curtain time will be 7 p.m. June 19 and 20 and 3 p.m. June 21.
The musical, first performed on Broadway in 1971, tells the story of the last week of Jesus, from Palm Sunday to the crucifixion. The local production stars Frank Lucas as Judas and Cory Spinell as Jesus.
The entire cast is composed of local residents. “It's local people, but very diverse. It's a variety of so many talented people,” Jurado said.
“Because it is a smaller cast, everybody else is playing three or four different roles. They have a lot to do,” said Laura Gray, who is one of the founders of the Waterford Players.
The performance will include a live band, with a keyboard, drums, bass and guitar.
Gray noted that the play depicts the crucifixion of Jesus, along with physical violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
“We're making history because there is no other thing like the opening of the first play for a new stage,” said Jurado, who began his theater career in Mexico 37 years ago. “So, I know that it's a big commitment, but I'm pretty sure that the guys are going to cause a great impression.
“Come and watch an amazing show. This is probably one of the most talented casts that I've seen in the last five years around the area. So, you're going to have a lot of fun, and bring some tissues. You're going to need them.”
Tickets for the show are $20 and can be ordered online at www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/jesus-christ-superstar. Tickets are also available at the door, though seating is limited.
The third floor of the municipal building is wheelchair accessible via a chairlift.
