Work has begun on replacing the roof on the Broadway Brewhouse building, which was damaged by a windstorm in March.

“Cranes will be used on the project, so expect that area of South Broadway to be temporarily blocked from traffic when necessary,” Mayor Joel Day told council members at their meeting June 8.

Also, the sidewalk in front of the business, located at 127 S. Broadway will remain closed while the work is being done, the mayor said.

Service Director Ron McAbier reported that Tuscarawas County is one of 18 counties in Ohio that did not receive a bid from any company to provide road salt. New Philadelphia, like other communities in the area, purchases salt through the Ohio Department of Transportation to save money.

Holmes and Carroll counties also did not receive bids for road salt.

The city had been planning on ordering 1,800 tons of salt, McAbier said. New Philadelphia currently has enough road salt on hand to get through a typical Ohio winter.

ODOT will rebid the purchase of salt in the near future, he said.

Day reported that the city will receive $250,000 through the State Capital Budget to fund improvements to Southside Community Park. The funding is coming through the efforts of state Sen. Al Landis, R-Dover, and state Rep. Jodi Salvo, R-Bolivar.

The funding will help complete the remaining Phase 2 projects at the park, including completion of the one-mile walking trail around the park’s perimeter and the extension of the entrance road to the high school soccer fields parking lot.

Day reminded residents that ODOT District 11 has scheduled another open house to gather more public input on the redesign of the Interstate 77/U.S. Route 250/state Route 39 interchange on West High Avenue.

The open house will take place from 4-7 p.m. June 30 at Buckeye Career Center’s Joe Carlisle Cafe.

“Public feedback on the proposed improvements will help shape ODOT’s Alternative Evaluation Report, which is required to finalize the project’s design,” Day said.

A similar open house was held last December.
