New Philadelphia’s girls basketball team continued its winning ways over the Christmas break, bouncing back from its only loss with four consecutive victories to improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.

New Philadelphia’s girls basketball team continued its winning ways over the Christmas break, bouncing back from its only loss with four consecutive victories to improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. Those wins included triumphs last week over Indian Valley, 43-37, and Mansfield Senior, 31-21.

Against Indian Valley, Aubrie Wells led the way with 15 points, while Katelyn Mamula added nine and Khloe Sours scored eight.

The Quakers have a key OCC showdown at home Jan. 14 against Ashland, followed by a rematch at Wooster Jan. 28. Wooster handed New Philadelphia its only loss, a 54-37 setback Dec. 13.

New Philadelphia’s boys were off to a 7-3 start nearing the midway point of the season and were 3-3 in the OCC. The Quakers entered the week on a three-game winning streak, including a pair of victories last week over Zanesville, 53-36, and Ashland, 63-47. Jackson Martini had 20 points and seven rebounds in the win over Ashland.

In action involving other area teams:

Dover: Dover’s boys remained atop the OCC, unbeaten in three league starts despite a pair of nonconference losses. The Tornadoes fell to Perry, 53-41, and Indian Valley, 61-55, with a 52-36 OCC win over Madison Comprehensive in between. Robbie Copple had 19 points and eight assists against Madison. Dover improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the OCC.

Dover’s girls struggled over the break, dropping four of five games to fall to 3-8 overall following a 33-29 loss to John Glenn Jan. 5. That left Dover at 2-5 in the OCC.

Tuscarawas Central Catholic: The Saints had a productive break, earning their first two wins of the season with a 48-44 victory over Lucas and a 33-31 win over Springfield. Dylan Dumermuth led the Lucas win with 15 points, while Ethan Rothrock added 10. Against Springfield, Dumermuth scored nine, and Rothrock and Gavin Rankin added six apiece.

In a loss to Steubenville Central Catholic, Dumermuth had 17 points and Rothrock scored 14. The Saints improved to 2-7 overall and were still seeking their first Inter-Valley Conference win, which they were set to pursue Jan. 6 at Newcomerstown.

Claymont: Claymont’s girls continued as one of the season’s good stories, though their four-game winning streak ended with a 49-33 loss to state power Hiland Jan. 5. Two days earlier, the Mustangs defeated Indian Valley, 45-35. Claymont was 8-5 overall heading into the week and 4-3 in the IVC. Ava Edwards led the win over Indian Valley with 19 points, while Brittanie Connor chipped in nine. Edwards scored 12 against Hiland, and Aubree Cottrell added 11.

Claymont’s boys cooled slightly after a 5-0 start but were still 7-3 overall heading into the week, including 4-2 in the IVC. The Mustangs had league games Jan. 6 at home against Indian Valley and Jan. 9 at Strasburg-Franklin.

Newcomerstown: Newcomerstown’s girls snapped a three-game losing streak with a 58-37 win over Tuscarawas Central Catholic Jan. 3. The Trojans were 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the IVC heading into a matchup Jan. 7 at Sandy Valley, which was off to an 8-3 start.
