Bolivar Council appoints Huth as zoning inspector
Council also addresses police training, pay ordinances, utilities and street maintenance plans.
Bolivar Village Council passed an ordinance Sept. 4 to appoint Michela Huth as zoning inspector, entering into a contract that pays her $45 per hour for up to 15 hours a month.
Councilman Dan Oberlin cast the lone no vote, citing that the village did not accept applications for the position. Fiscal Officer Maria App said officials can make an appointment without seeking applications.
Council also approved Police Chief Chad Hilty to attend OPATA training in Columbus. The registration cost was $265, though the training itself was free. Council approved mileage reimbursement at 70 cents per mile and food at $30 per day per village policy, along with hotel accommodations — two nights in September and five nights in October — at $150 per night.
Other council actions
— Passed an ordinance establishing salaries, hourly pay rates and benefits for certain village service positions.
— Passed an ordinance setting hourly rates for part-time and auxiliary police officers. Part-time officers will earn $19.50 per hour; auxiliary officers will serve without pay.
— Adopted an ordinance approving the village’s cybersecurity and incident response policy.
— Approved the purchase of seven new Verizon desk phones at a cost of $203.
— Authorized Spectrum to provide telephone service to the pump house for up to $50 per month, saving the village about $80 monthly.
— Noted that Village Administrator Patty Smith completed her probation Sept. 7 and will receive an additional $1 per hour.
— Learned the village leaf vacuum was repaired at a cost of $3,112 and the water tank was cleaned for $4,630. The tank showed no leaks, but there is a leak in the line outside the tank.
— Proposed paving village streets every other year, with crack sealing and tree removal in the off year. Oberlin voiced opposition, saying streets should be paved annually.
— Authorized Village Solicitor Stephan Babik to prepare a probable civil lawsuit against property owners or tenants at 540 Park Ave. for placing items in a village-owned alley.
Other business
— The annual Century Bicycle Ride will pass through the village at the end of September.
— Police reported 75 calls and 20 traffic stops.
The next council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at 121 Canal St. SE, Bolivar.
