Area swim teams compete at Cloverleaf Stampede

Dover, New Philadelphia and Strasburg-Franklin girls teams and Dover and New Philadelphia boys teams competed at the Cloverleaf Stampede Dec. 27 at Wooster High School.

Dover, New Philadelphia and Strasburg-Franklin girls teams and Dover and New Philadelphia boys teams competed at the Cloverleaf Stampede Dec. 27 at Wooster High School.

Dover’s boys turned in the top showing among the area teams, placing sixth out of 21 teams. New Philadelphia finished 14th. In the girls competition, Strasburg-Franklin placed 15th, one spot ahead of Dover, while New Philadelphia finished 20th.

Dover’s boys posted a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as senior Thomas Perkowski, juniors Evan Dorenkott and Danny Peltz and sophomore Tanis Handerhan combined for the performance. Perkowski won the 100 freestyle and was runner-up in the 50 freestyle. Handerhan placed third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Dorenkott finished second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 individual medley.

For Dover’s girls, Sara Cotlet placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke, while Ruth Cotlet finished 10th in the 200 individual medley. Sara Cotlet, Ruth Cotlet, Teagan Hill and Abigail Lane finished 10th in the 200 freestyle relay.

New Philadelphia’s boys were led by Jacob Haren, who placed fifth in the 100 backstroke. The Quakers also took ninth in the 200 freestyle relay with Kasen Jones, Teagan Zimmerman, Jacob Haren and Ben Haren. Ben Haren placed 10th in the 100 freestyle, while Jacob Haren finished 11th in the 200 individual medley. Zimmerman placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke.

Strasburg-Franklin’s Kyle McKenzie placed third in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle.

Orrville won the girls team title with 180 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Louisville (166). Dresden Tri-Valley won the boys competition with 159 points to outpace Beaver (133).

New Philadelphia boys edge St. Clairsville

In a dual meet Jan. 2, New Philadelphia hosted St. Clairsville and earned a split. The Quaker boys won 55-49, while the girls fell 79-27.

For the girls, MaKenna Cole won the 200 and 500 freestyle. Bailey Tidrick placed second in the 50 and 500 freestyle.

For the boys, the 200 medley relay team of Kasen Jones, Teagan Zimmerman, Ben Haren and Carter Jackson won. Individual winners included Ben Haren (100 butterfly), Zimmerman (500 freestyle) and Jones (100 backstroke). The Quakers also won the 400 freestyle relay with Haren, Jones, Jackson and Zimmerman.
