Sandy Valley approves new sports and teaching contracts

BOE approved a five-year financial forecast showing a deficit of $1.2 million in fiscal year 2029 and $5.2 million in fiscal year 2030

Spring supplemental contracts for baseball, girls track, softball and boys track were approved at the Feb. 23 meeting of the Sandy Valley Board of Education.

Baseball — Rylee Wallace, varsity head coach; Trevor Yoder, varsity assistant coach; Brian DePalmo, junior varsity head coach; Jacob Walker, freshman head coach.

Girls track — Juliana Borsellino, varsity head coach; Amanda Gonzalez-Lidderdale, varsity assistant coach; Rebecca Michel, middle school coach; Sarah Schoeppner, volunteer coach.

Softball — Cortney Geiger, varsity head coach; Alyssa Sines, varsity assistant coach; Alyssa Sickafoose, junior varsity head coach.

Boys track — Jason Calkins, varsity head coach; Gregory Howard, varsity assistant coach; Joseph Welker, middle school coach; Brandon Young, spring strength and conditioning; Kristopher Nign, winter strength and conditioning.

Approved as Good News Club volunteers were Barbara Donaldson, Melodie Donaldson, Randy Donaldson, Lisa Wigfield, Ryan Wilson, Kristen Wood and Daniel Woods.

Other supplemental contracts approved for the 2026-27 school year included Daniel O’Callaghan, head girls soccer coach; Alyssa Sines, head girls volleyball coach; and Torrance Carle, head football coach.

In other business, the board:

— Approved a one-year contract for Torrance Carle as a 9-12 English language arts teacher.

— Approved the resignations of Olivia Plunk, teacher, effective at the end of the 2025-26 school year, and Sommer Warwick, bus driver, effective Feb. 20.

— Approved the retirements of Gary Offenberger, Tammie Hatalla and Tammy Leyda, all teachers, effective at the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year, with 33, 24 and 28 years of service, respectively, and Mary Seward.

— Approved Brian Schwall to hire necessary supporting staff for the spring musical March 13-15.

— Approved Brian DePalmo and Maria Sancic as temporary substitute teachers.

— Approved Ashley Semrock and Raymond B. Humphrey as substitute van drivers.

— Approved the 2026-27 school calendar with classes beginning Aug. 18 and ending May 28.

— Approved student fundraisers for the Drama Club, SV FFA, Spanish Club, SV Student Council, Leo Club and high school softball.

— Approved a two-year annual donation of $2,000 to Stark Education Partnership to continue career exploration and YOU Science in the middle school.

— Approved membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association at a cost of $50 per sport for grades 9-12, with no dues for grades 7 and 8.

— Adopted a resolution to participate in the bus bid with the Stark County Schools Council.

— Voted to withdraw from the Inter-Valley Conference and join a new athletic conference.
