The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s New Philadelphia post is investigating a one-vehicle crash that killed an 18-year-old Friday, Feb. 20, on County Road 22 (Azalea Road) west of Leesville in Orange Township.
At about 6:38 p.m., a silver 2012 Volkswagen Passat was traveling east on County Road 22 when it crossed the centerline, went off the left side of the road and struck an embankment, the patrol said. The vehicle overturned and the driver was ejected.
The driver, Kyra Bunton, 18, of New Philadelphia, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner’s Office. A passenger, Charity Kulig, 18, of Midvale, suffered minor injuries and was taken by the Bowerston Fire Department to Mercy Hospital.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Bowerston and Leesville fire departments, the coroner’s office, Keith’s Towing and the Carroll County Road and Bridge Department assisted at the scene.
Alcohol is not suspected as a factor, the patrol said. Bunton was not wearing a seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
