Cutrona introduces bill to honor fallen trooper
Cayton was a 13-year veteran of the Ohio State Highway Patrol
State Sen. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield, has introduced Senate Bill 365 to designate a portion of state Route 11 in Mahoning County as the “Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton Memorial Highway.”
“Trooper Nicholas Cayton served his state and community with pride,” Cutrona said. “His unexpected passing in the line of duty broke the hearts of everyone who knew him. I know this memorial will honor a great Ohioan who gave his all while serving and protecting the Valley and eastern Ohio.”
A 13-year veteran of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton of the Canfield Post died Oct. 16, 2025, after his cruiser was struck by a semitrailer on state Route 11 in Canfield. Cayton was assisting a disabled commercial vehicle at the time of the crash.
A graduate of Carrollton High School, Cayton served in the Ohio Army National Guard before joining the highway patrol.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Transportation Committee for further consideration.
