Ten young men, including five who were married, filled Carroll County’s 190th induction call into the Armed Forces. They included Jay Allen Garrett, Kenneth Rogers, Ray E. Baker, Edward Gregory Morgan and Nelson O. Wilson. The married men included Walter E. Murphy, Alfred Stephen Logan, Harry Dean McCarty, James Scott Long and Terrey Lee Hoyt. James Allen Morvatz, who had been ordered for induction, enlisted in the Regular Army in Cleveland.
The Free Press Standard received two first-place awards and an honorable mention in the annual Hooper Newspaper Show. The two first-place awards were for a special edition for Carrollton’s sesquicentennial and for advertising.
Three Carrollton scouts received Scouting awards. They included brothers Dick and David Tinlin, who received the God and Country Award, and David Allmon and David Tinlin, both recipients of Scouting’s highest rank, the Eagle Scout.
The Carrollton Warriors defeated the invading United Eagles 81-68 while the Carrollton reserves earned their ninth win of the season by downing the Eagles’ seconds 60-42.

Connie Kiedrowicz, a sophomore at Carrollton High School, was selected by the District 665 Rotary Committee as an exchange student to spend a year in Brazil.
Raymond Roof, a Democrat, and Glenn Marshall, a Republican, began new four-year terms on the Carroll County Board of Elections.
A minstrel project by the Carrollton Jaycees brought honor to the local chapter from the Ohio Jaycees for excellence in a judging session involving more than 300 chapters throughout Ohio.
Carrollton’s Mike Henry was back on the basketball court to assist the Warriors in their 79-73 win over the Lake Blue Streaks.

After more than a decade, Carrollton earned a Senate League basketball championship following a 57-55 finish over Tusky Valley. The win was attained under head coach Dave Olinger.
Alicia Buch, an eighth-grader from Malvern, won the Carroll County Spelling Bee, topping 26 other students.
Carrollton gymnasts Jolie Guchemand and Becky Miller were presented special awards by their coach, Kristy Wheatly. Guchemand received the Most Valuable Player and Coach’s awards while Miller earned the Most Improved award.

Kevin Miller, a Carrollton High School sophomore, qualified for the state speech competition in Columbus and the national speech tournament in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Edwin Shriver was elected president of the Carroll County Ministerial Association while the Rev. Paul Camp was named vice president.
Carrollton junior Rachel Brown led the Lady Warriors in scoring and rebounding in their 33-31 win over Indian Creek to advance to sectional tournament play.

Carroll County commissioners made a decision to impose a 1% sales tax for a continuing period of time without asking for voter approval at the general election.
Matthew A. Murphy, a 2002 graduate of Malvern High School, was commissioned as a state highway patrolman.
Blaine Phillis was installed as worshipful master of Carroll Lodge 124, Free and Accepted Masons.
Amanda Bryan and Tim Funk were crowned the 2006 winter homecoming queen and king at Carrollton High School.
Carrollton senior Matt Manfull and freshman Travis Plavka won championships at the Buckeye Local Division II wrestling sectional.

It was snowy 10 years ago when Mother Nature dropped 5-8 inches of snow, downing trees and power lines and providing a playground for some and work for others.
Bob Hendricks of Scio, a 20-year Ruritan Club member, was named Citizen of the Year by the Scio Dining Fork Ruritan Club.
Carrollton senior Ali Poole set a new school single-game scoring mark with 39 points when the Warriors dominated the East Liverpool Potters 100-29.
