Carrollton’s annual Veterans Day service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Westview Cemetery beginning at 11 a.m.
Eddie McLean, a Carroll County Marine Corps veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq during 2007 and 2008, will be the guest speaker.
McLean, a Carrollton High School graduate, served more than five years of active duty during his seven-year enlistment. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Fighting McCook Post 3301 and Carroll County Veterans Club.
The service also will include the laying of wreaths at the two memorials, an opening and closing prayer, and the traditional three-gun salute by a rifle team of veterans.
The service and three-gun salute are in conformity with the original Armistice Day established when World War I ended at “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.”
However, in 1954, then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
Then, in 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, moving the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law reportedly went into effect in 1971 but was changed in 1975 by President Gerald Ford to Nov. 11 due to the important holiday significance of the date.
Veterans Day commemorates veterans of all wars, along with current military personnel.
