Port Washington council approves purchases, sets spring cleanup dates

The Port Washington Village Council met March 17 with Mayor Thomas J. Gardner presiding.

Council members Joe Bourne, Brandie Bourne, John Little, Jeff Gardner, Jeff McDonald and Steve Adams were present. There were no absences. Also attending were DJ Meek, zoning and mayor’s assistant, and Tim Bryant, street commissioner. Nancy Bourne was present as a visitor.

Council approved the minutes from the March 3 meeting and authorized payment of bills from the appropriate funds.

Street Commissioner Tim Bryant reported that stop signs were installed at Canal and High streets, potholes were filled, street sweeping was completed and trees were cleaned up at Union Cemetery. Bryant expressed appreciation to John Bourne for assistance with tree work at the cemetery.

Bryant said he will seek pricing for installing a camera on the village’s bobcat to improve safety. He also reported that a used salt spreader will be auctioned March 28 in Tuscarawas and could be installed on the village’s gator. Council approved spending up to $500 for the purchase. Bryant noted a new salt spreader would cost an estimated $1,500 to $2,000.

Council also approved blacktopping a small alley at the end of Dichler Drive, with an estimated cost of $7,000.

In zoning matters, one permit was issued for 108 W. Arch St.

Mayor Gardner reminded residents that Christmas and winter arrangements should be removed from graves at Union Cemetery by Easter, April 5. He also announced spring cleanup will be held April 17-18. Two roll-off dumpsters will be available behind 105 W. Main St., in the lot formerly known as the Old Ugly Mug. Tires and hazardous waste will not be accepted.

Joe Bourne thanked the Delaware Valley Joint Fire District and its members for hosting a successful spaghetti dinner. Brandie Bourne also expressed appreciation to residents for their support of the event and reminded council that the department’s Memorial Day chicken dinner will be held in May. She also reported attending the County Health District banquet, where enforcement of state septic system regulations was discussed.

Jeff McDonald reported that Jeff Gardner recently attended a Tri-County EMS meeting, where it was announced that the agency plans to purchase a new ambulance.

Council adopted Ordinance 2026-04 establishing a social media policy for the village following its third reading. Council also approved the final revision of Ordinance 2026-02 for the sidewalk project.

The next meeting will be held April 7 at 7 p.m.
