Library to host Sustainable Living Faire
Guests can meet local vendors and organizations while exploring homesteading, traditional skills and renewable resources
The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will hold its third annual Sustainable Living Faire from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Main Library in New Philadelphia.
Guests can meet local vendors and organizations while exploring homesteading, traditional skills and renewable resources.
“As a library, we are pleased to encourage adults and families to learn traditional and sustainable living skills, collaborate, and explore new ideas,” Support Services Manager Cara Randall said.
The Sustainable Living Faire is co-sponsored by Lehman’s and the Friends of the Main Library. Organizers said the event has expanded in its third year with more vendor tables and more than 30 breakout classes or demonstrations.
Demonstrations and hands-on activities will be offered by groups and businesses including The Pindrop Shop, Wayne County Sustainable Energy Network, Woodland Herbals, Squirrelwood Farms and the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.
“There will be something to inspire everyone regardless of your interest or your age,” Public Relations Associate Emily Price said. “There is a nice combination of demonstrations and informational tables from foraging and solar basics to at-home butchering and bountiful gardening.”
Presentations will include certified Ohio Volunteer Naturalist Jean Paddock on simple sustainability at home, the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District on recycling challenges and opportunities, and Crumb Cottage on an introduction to sourdough baking.
Zack Miller will demonstrate mushroom log inoculation. The Wilderness Center, Terra Depot and Working Gardens will offer information on sharing spaces with pollinators, birds and bats. Camp TuscZoar will discuss making maple syrup. John Oliver will share tips on growing garlic, and Sandy Slope Farms will talk about home dairy animals.
A seed and bulb swap also will be held during the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Participants are invited to bring packets of seeds or bulbs labeled with the variety and date collected,” Adult Services Manager Tabitha Johnson said.
The event will be held under cover, rain or shine, on all three levels of the library. Door prizes will be available.
No registration is required. For information, call 330-364-4474 or visit tusclibrary.org. The Main Library is at 121 Fair Ave. NW, New Philadelphia.
