Claymont High School has established the Claymont Athletic Hall of Fame and will induct its inaugural class Friday, Jan. 9, 2026.
The hall of fame aims to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of athletes, coaches, teams and community members who have left a lasting impact on the Claymont athletic program.
The induction ceremony will take place in the high school gymnasium Jan. 9, 2026, between the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games against Strasburg.
A reception for inductees and their families will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Claymont High School cafeteria, hosted by the Claymont Athletic Boosters, who will provide hors d’oeuvres.
The inaugural Claymont Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026 includes the 1981 girls basketball state championship team; the 1992 wrestling state championship team; Jeff Arthurs, head track and cross country coach with several state champions and placers; Rhonda Funkhouser, head coach of the 1981 girls basketball state champions; Andy Pentecost, 1984 and 1985 discus state champion; Rich Ronald, 1989 state cross country champion and 1990 1,600-meter state champion; Troy Sproul, 1993 and 1994 discus state champion; Dave Smith, 1971-72 Ohio basketball player of the year; Eric Toukonen, head coach of the 1992 wrestling state champions; and Gary Watkins, 1988 Ohio AA player of the year.
“This is a momentous occasion for Claymont High School and the entire community,” said Justin Jones, athletic director. “The individuals we are honoring in this first class set the standard for athletic excellence and sportsmanship. We look forward to establishing the hall of fame as a lasting tradition to inspire future generations of Mustangs.”

The junior varsity game is scheduled for 6 p.m., and tickets will be sold at the door. The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony and recognize the inductees.
