ARTSNCT, in partnership with the Newcomerstown Historical Society, has completed the restoration of two rare historic bass drums and is now taking on the preservation of a John Philip Sousa Band uniform once worn by local music legend Manuel Yingling.
With support from the Tuscarawas Arts Partnership and local artist Lynn Fraelich, the group brought new life to a nearly century-old bass drum from the Newcomerstown Concert Band, dating from around 1920–1930. The instrument was initially thought to be beyond repair. In the process, ARTSNCT also restored a second antique drum from 1915 belonging to the Newcomerstown Boy Scouts — an unexpected success that further underscored the organization’s dedication.

Now, the group has begun work on Yingling’s uniform, more than 110 years old, which he wore while touring the country with Sousa’s world-famous band. Yingling, a trombonist, composer, educator and director of the Hyperion Band until his death in 1925, was a celebrated figure in the village’s musical life.
The restoration is being led by Chandra Obie Linn, Conservator of Textiles at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Linn, who holds a master’s degree from the Textile Conservation Centre in England, has worked with historic garments, samurai armor, contemporary Aboriginal art and more.
Only part of the funds needed to complete the project have been raised. Donations may be sent to ARTSNCT, 304 S. College St., Newcomerstown, OH 43832. Once the work is finished, both drums and the uniform will be displayed at the Olde Main Street Museum on Canal Street.
Yingling’s influence extended beyond music. His nephew, Norman Bel Geddes, became a pioneering American designer, and Norman’s daughter, Barbara Bel Geddes, earned fame as Miss Ellie on the television series Dallas.
“ARTSNCT is proud to honor the legacy of Manuel Yingling and all those who came before us by preserving these tangible pieces of our history,” a spokesperson said. “Through community partnerships, generous support, and expert craftsmanship, we are ensuring that Newcomerstown’s artistic heartbeat continues to resonate for generations to come.”
