Dover High bands to perform in Newcomerstown

Steel drum and jazz bands to play at Newcomerstown Middle School April 18

On Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m., the stage at Newcomerstown Middle School will come alive with the sounds of the Dover High School Steel Drum Band and Jazz Band.

ARTSNCT invites the community to experience another afternoon of live music as part of its Arts for All performance series.

On Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m., the stage at Newcomerstown Middle School will come alive with the sounds of the Dover High School Steel Drum Band and Jazz Band.

The Dover High School Steel Drum Band, originally founded in 1992 by Joan Wenzel, longtime Dover band director and percussion specialist, has become a musical staple throughout Tuscarawas County and beyond. Known for its high-energy performances, the group brings the spirit of the Caribbean to every stage. Audiences can expect a mix of calypso rhythms, popular tunes and engaging arrangements that showcase both the unique character of steel pan instruments and the talent of the student musicians.

Now under the direction of Dover Band Director Chris Redd, the ensemble continues its tradition. Complementing the steel band’s rhythms, the Dover High School Jazz Band will deliver a set of swing, jazz and contemporary favorites. Featuring a full complement of brass and woodwinds and a rhythm section, the jazz band highlights the rich tradition of American jazz music — from classic big band sounds to modern interpretations.

Before the concert there will be a freewill donation lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m., provided by the Newcomerstown Historical Society in the school cafeteria. This concert marks the second performance in ARTSNCT’s 2026 Free Performance Series.

Looking ahead, the series will continue with a performance by the Dominic Greco Band at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, also at Newcomerstown Middle School. A freewill donation lunch will again be served beginning at 11:30 a.m.

All performances are part of ARTSNCT’s Arts for All initiative — ensuring everyone, regardless of background or financial means, can experience the arts.

No tickets are required.
