Mileage-based maintenance tips help keep vehicles safe and reliable

From fluid checks to tire rotations and warranty inspections, routine upkeep prevents costly repairs down the road

Following a recommended maintenance schedule can help ensure vehicles function properly.

Modern vehicles have surpassed their predecessors thanks to innovations that make driving and maintenance safer, easier and more convenient. In spite of these advancements, vehicle ownership still requires drivers to maintain their cars and trucks so they perform as designed. Proper upkeep also improves safety and saves money by preventing more costly repairs. Following a recommended maintenance schedule can help ensure vehicles function properly.

Every 3,000 miles is a good time to check all fluids in the car to be sure levels are where they should be. These include coolant, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid and engine oil.

At 5,000 miles, drivers should change the vehicle’s oil and fuel filter if using conventional oil. Vehicles using synthetic oil may be able to go farther between changes. Many vehicles use an internal computer system to alert drivers when it is time to change the oil. This may also be a good time to change the cabin and engine air filters. Drivers should look under the hood and check the battery terminals for corrosion or loose cables.

At 10,000 miles, it is time to have the tires rotated. Rotating the tires at regular intervals helps avoid uneven wear. The vehicle may also need a tire alignment, especially if it pulls to one side. Brake problems often alert drivers on their own, but a visual inspection at this stage is also wise.

At 36,000 miles, new vehicle owners may want to have their vehicles inspected thoroughly before the standard three-year warranty expires. This allows any issues to be corrected before they become more costly.

At 50,000 miles or more, drivers should inspect the exhaust, emissions and suspension systems. Transmission fluid may also need to be drained and replaced. Tires may require replacement around this time as well.
