Tuscarawas County Library hosts annual Holiday Open House Nov. 15

Family event features cooking demos, crafts, live reindeer and the unveiling of the crocheted Spirit of Christmas Community Tree

The Spirit of Christmas Community Tree was inspired by this one at the New York Public Library.

The Tuscarawas County Public Library’s Main Library will kick off the holiday season with its annual Holiday Open House Saturday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This is an event for the entire family,” said Children’s Services Manager Mary Smrek. “Activities and programs are planned for all ages.”

Festivities begin early with a sugar-free cooking demonstration by Bev Keller and Michelle Specht at 10:30 a.m. Visitors can also meet a live reindeer, enjoy crafts and games for kids, and shop from local vendors including Cozy Cat Crafted, Blue Bird Pottery and The Opal Collection.

New Philadelphia native Linda Reese will feature her family cookbook, "Season Everything with Love," offering samples and autographs. At 1 p.m., Rebecca Gromley from the Ohio State University Extension Office will host a gluten-free cooking demonstration.

Guests are invited to participate in a holiday ornament swap by bringing gently used ornaments between Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 to receive a ticket for the exchange. Attendees can also learn how to tie festive bows, enjoy live music and cookies, and take a group photo at a winter-themed photo station.

“Something extra exciting at this year’s Holiday Open House is that the Spirit of Christmas Community Tree will be unveiled and remain on display at the county’s Main Library throughout the holiday season,” said Library Director Michelle McMorrow Ramsell.

The 11-foot tree, made entirely of crocheted granny squares and topped with a crocheted Moravian star, was spearheaded by community members Cathleen Misko and Sherri Perry. Inspired by the work of Pat Boron and a similar tree displayed at the New York Public Library, Misko and Perry have taught many to crochet this year, collecting hundreds of squares from nearly 60 community members of all ages.

Two gingerbread house kits will be given away as door prizes. The library will also feature holiday music, movies and books available for checkout.

The event is free, but registration is requested. Participants may register through the online event calendar at tusclibrary.org or by calling the Main Library at 330-364-4474. The library is located at 121 Fair Ave. NW in New Philadelphia.
