As temperatures drop, many people turn to electric space heaters to keep their homes comfortable. While these portable heaters can be a great way to supplement your home’s heating system, they also come with fire risks if not used properly. The National Fire Protection Association reminds everyone to follow these safety tips to prevent accidents and stay warm safely.
Safety Tips for Using Space Heaters
Purchase a space heater that has been tested and certified by a recognized laboratory.
Keep the heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, bedding and curtains.
Always place the heater on a flat, level surface — never on furniture or near water.
Choose a model with an automatic shut-off feature that turns off the heater if it tips over.
Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or power strips.
Turn off and unplug the heater when leaving the room or going to bed.
Keep children and pets away from the heater and make sure it does not block any exits.

Oil- or water-filled radiator: Uses heated liquid to distribute warmth.
Fan-forced heater: Uses a fan to blow air across a heated element.
