New Philadelphia’s boys cross country team made the most of
a trip to the Columbus area last Saturday, winning the 1A race at the
Pickerington North Invitational. The Quakers totaled 59 points, to top
runner-up Westerville North’s 72.
That finish was aided by a trio of top-10 finishes in a
race that included 161 finishers. Seniors Marcus Adelman (15:37.8) and Wyatt
Lendon (15:40.71) came in fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead the Quakers.
Classmate Alec Adelman crossed ninth in 16:11.10.
Another senior, Kyle Beaber, finished in 16:32.9 to place 19th,
three spots ahead of Quaker junior Kevin Smith, who finished in 16:39.71 to
round out the scoring runners. Juniors Branson Pringle (60th) and Austin
Pringle (124th) rounded out the New Philadelphia lineup.
The Quakers, who were competing against Division I
competition, have dropped down to Division II this season, meaning this outcome
proved a pretty solid barometer where things to come are concerned.
Girls cross country
The Quaker girls competed in one of the more unique meets
the season offers, running in the dark at the HOKA Kickoff Classic in
Painesville on Aug. 23. With only four runners, the Quakers did not get an
official placement. Junior Devlin Herrington was the team’s top finisher. She
came in 147th place, finishing in 24:33.71. Freshman Audrey Rosnek
finished 243rd in 27:17.92. Senior Addy VanArsdalen was next,
placing 264th in 28:30.71, while sophomore Ellie Byers was 282nd
in 29:45.48.
Volleyball
New Philadelphia moved to 1-2 overall after splitting a pair
of Ohio Cardinal Conference matches. They first fell 3-1 at Ashland on Aug. 21
before returning home two days later to sweep Mansfield Senior in three sets.
Junior Eberle Baker led the Quakers against Ashland at the net with 12 kills
in the match. She added three blocks. Sophomore Stella Halter led the team with
four blocks. Senior Aubrie Watson paced the quakers with 21 digs, three more
than senior Marisa Loader, who had a team-best 23 assists. Watson also paced the squad with 29 service
receptions.
The Quakers dominated Mansfield, allowing just 27 points in
three sets. New Philadelphia was set to play conference matches on Aug. 26 and
28, respectively, against Wooster and at Lexington.
Boys soccer
Despite playing some solid defense in the early going, the
Quakers have struggled out of the gate a bit, sitting at 0-2-1 heading into an
Aug. 30 home game against Ashland. The good news was, neither loss came in the
Ohio Cardinal Conference. New Philadelphia allowed just three goals over the
first three matches but could only muster one itself, that in a 2-1 loss at
Massillon Perry. The Quakers opened the season with a scoreless tie at Madison
Comprehensive.
Girls soccer
The Quaker girls got off to a 1-2 start but struggled a bit
on the defensive end in the two defeats, particularly an 8-0 home loss to
Madison Comprehensive on Aug. 21. Since winning 1-0 at River View to start the
season, New Philadelphia was outscored 12-2. Jillian Hanes was the Quakers’ top
scorer early on with a goal and an assist. Katie Brown and Belinda Vasquez each
found the net once, with Miriam Hernandez Sica chipping in one assist.
Tuscarawas Central Catholic
Saints senior Elena Price ran solo at the Claymont Earlybird
Invitational on Aug. 23. She had an outstanding day, placing eighth in the
small-school girls division with a time of 23:35.41, 43 seconds ahead of the
next finisher.
The TCC boys had three finishers at Claymont. Sophomore Alex
Mercer finished 40th, senior Steven Simpson placed 47th,
and sophomore Collin Virag finished 78th.
Volleyball
The Tuscarawas Central Catholic volleyball team entered the
week on a bit of a streak, following a season-opening loss to Waynedale with a
pair of match victories. They included a 3-0 sweep of Sandy Valley and a 3-1
win over powerful Dalton, both on the road.
Heading into matches with Malvern, Conotton Valley and
Coshicton, senior Khloe Trivoli lead TCC with 77 kills and 10 total blocks. She
also had a team-best hitting percentage of .414. Sophomore Miya Oldon led with 51
digs. Junior setter Jessica Selinsky was tops with 110 assists and nine aces.
