Mineral City to receive grant for playground equipment

Published

At the Aug. 28 meeting of Mineral City Village Council, Parks Committee Chair Rick Cain said he was contacted by the Reeves Foundation regarding a $50,000 grant they intend to award the village for playground equipment at the new village park. While substantial, the grant will cover only part of the cost of new playground equipment. Cain said the committee will be seeking other grants to cover remaining costs and grass seeding.

The plan to continue seeking and using grant funding is part of council’s commitment to not useany village money for the new park project.

Reports to council

Mayor Laurie Green said he has corresponded with Village Solicitor Cassidy Wahlie regarding placing the former elementary school property on the market. According to Wahlie, the property must be sold in a public bidding process with very strict stipulations as it is a government property.

Green also said she received cybersecurity recommendations from the Public Entities Pool, which insures the village.

Street Supervisor Sam Moore advised council that the mini backhoe is in need of some preventative maintenance, which will be performed by the street department. Council President Terry Nill mentioned that an area of Sandyville Road is sinking and needs more asphalt.

Council member Beth Nill reported for the zoning committee, saying she followed up with Francis Adams after her appearance at the Aug. 14 council meeting and that all pertinent zoning ordinances have been sent to Adams.

For the fire department, Moore said he will be contacting Cardinal Environmental Services for asbestos removal a property on Miners Street slated for demolition. Moore also reported that the fire department’s volunteers underwent a critical stress debriefing following their response to the Atwood Lake drownings.

Terry Nill reported that the library/village hall roof has been repaired and the cost will be covered by the Friends of the Library. He also said TCM Waterproofing provided an estimate of $24,529 to repair water damage in a crawl space in the same building.

According to Terry Nill, the pot in the King of Hearts library fundraiser stood at $4,511 as of Aug. 28. Drawings take place every Friday at 5 p.m. at the library.

Terry Nill also said the seat of the library’s picnic table has been repaired and an informational sign has been placed in front of the library.

In old business

Green said there is still an open council seat and interested parties should send a letter of interest to her attention at Village of Mineral City, P.O. Box 336, Mineral City, OH 44656.

Beth Nill said she drafted a letter to the Tusky Valley School District regarding concerns from village residents about the lack of school crossing guards on state Route 800

Mineral City Council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 5 p.m. at village hall. All meetings are open to the public.
