Lifeway Church in New Philadelphia launches monthly Family Fun Day

September’s event is a field day and will include nine square, sack races, obstacle course relays, volleyball, a hula hoop contest, gaga ball and more.

Free second-Saturday events will feature games, activities for all ages, and parenting resources.

Beginning in September, Lifeway Church, 742 Cookson Ave. SE, New Philadelphia will host a Family Fun Day every second Saturday of the month. The event is free and open to all families, with an afternoon of old-fashioned fun planned.

Each month will feature a different theme. September’s event is a field day and will include nine square, sack races, obstacle course relays, volleyball, a hula hoop contest, gaga ball and more.

There will also be activities for younger children, including mini basketball, face painting, crafts, giant puzzles and playdough. Parents do not have to set up or clean up—just come and enjoy an afternoon with the kids, away from screens and video games.

The idea came from Amy Hayes, who moved to the area two years ago and was surprised to find no community recreation center.

“We hope that one day Lifeway will have a permanent rec center to offer the community,” Hayes said. “Until then, we want to offer this monthly event to give families a place to unplug, relax and fellowship with other families. We will also have a resource table with information about community resources that may be of use to families.”

Local businesses and organizations offering family resources are invited to contact Lifeway Church to be included on the table.

Family Fun Day will run from 2-4 p.m. every second Saturday of the month. The first event is scheduled for Sept. 13.

In addition, from 1-2 p.m., Graceful Parenting founder Amy Hayes will lead a free class for new parents. The session will provide a brief introduction to caring for newborns, but anyone is welcome to attend.

“It’s always been my heart to help parents get off on the right foot,” Hayes said. “I’m passionate about doing whatever I can to equip parents to raise kids who flourish.”
