Highway Patrol investigating crash, gas fire near Atwood Lake

Jeep strikes pump house on state Route 212 in Warren Township; driver suffers minor injuries as flames spread to nearby land.

The impact ruptured gas lines inside the structure, and the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

The New Philadelphia Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle injury crash on state Route 212 near the Atwood Lake spillway that caused a natural gas fire.

The crash occurred Sept. 8 at 1:40 p.m. on state Route 212 near milepost 17 in Warren Township.

Troopers said a white 2007 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Misty M. Parks, 44, of Scio, was traveling east when it went off the right side of the road and struck a gas line pump house. The impact ruptured gas lines inside the structure, and the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The fire spread to the pump house and nearby land.

Parks was able to exit the vehicle and get to safety. She suffered minor injuries and was taken by Smith Ambulance to Union Hospital.

Representatives from Enbridge Gas quickly located a shutoff valve near the scene and stopped the gas supply. The natural gas lines fueling the fire are serviced by Northeast Ohio Gas, which also responded and helped contain the leak.

The Ohio Department of Transportation assisted with road closures and traffic control. Other responding agencies included the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfield Township Fire Department, Sherrodsville Fire Department, Enbridge Gas, Northeast Ohio Gas and Keith’s Towing.
