Dover teams shine in cross country, volleyball and soccer

Tornadoes claim invitational titles in cross country, sweep league foes in volleyball, and notch wins on the soccer field.

Dover’s cross country team hosted the annual Dover Invitational last weekend. The meet featured a solid field of area teams and the host squads did not disappoint.

Senior Chase Daniel was the third finisher overall, second in the large-team division to pace the boys squad. Sophomore Bethany Hutchison placed 15th overall and fourth in the big-school division to lead the Dover girls, just ahead of senior Addie Hindman (18th/sixth, 23:15.5).

Daniel’s time of 17:16.7 was just four seconds behind East Liverpool senior Maddox Roach, who won the big-school race. Columbus Hartley senior Rowan Smith won the overall boys race in 17:10.2.

Daniel led a stellar showing by the boys squad, which won the big-school meet with 36 points, placing all seven runners in the top 26, and putting its five scorers among the first 11 in the team race and top 13 overall. 

Following Daniel were junior Tyler Shuss (seventh, 19:05.2), sophomores Elijah Perlaky (11th, 19:09.0) and Hunter Anslow (12th, 19:16.0), and junior Tony Pastor-Calel (19:22.5) among the scorers, and junior Maddox Miller (24th, 20:43.3) and sophomore Kyler Roberson (28th, 21:10.4)to round out the lineup. 

The Tornadoes won the girls’ big-school race with 42 points, placing five runners in the top 13. Indian Valley was next with 48, edging out third-place Meadowbrook.

Right behind Hutchison and Hindman was sophomore Cassidy McGee, who finished seventh in the big-school race, clocking 23:17.9. Junior Ella Kitchen was 12th in 24:55.7, just one place and four seconds ahead of senior Lyela Miller.

Juniors Adlee Klaiber (22nd, 25:49) and Natalie Bambeck (25th, 26:15.6) rounded out the top seven. Just missing that group by a second and one spot was freshman Aubrie Hindman. 

Volleyball

Dover had an impressive week last week, posting straight-set Ohio Cardinal Conference victories over Ashland and Lexington to stay one game back of first-place and unbeaten Wooster in the league standings. Ashland fell 25-19, 25-22, 25-10, while Lexington went down 25-23, 25-13, 25-20. 

Against Ashland, senior Caroline Hanner led with 10 kills, one more than classmate Hailey Kuecher, who added three aces and a pair of blocks. Senior Quincy Werntz paced the Tornadoes with four aces and 26 assists, and added eight digs. Senior Chera Schmidt led with 10 digs. 

In the Lexington match Hanner had 14 kills and six digs, both team-highs. Kuecher led with three blocks. Wentz logged 32 assists. Senior Kelsey Kazelman posted six aces in just 12 service attempts. Junior Meghan Ravine chipped in five digs. 

The Tornadoes headed into the state ranked No. 5 in Division III by MaxPreps. Wooster is No. 10 in Division II. 

Boys soccer

The Tornadoes got healthy a bit with a 7-3 non-conference win at Steubenville on Sept. 6. That followed a tough 1-0 conference loss at home to New Philadelphia, in which a late first-half goal was the difference. Against Steubenville, the Tornedoes took no chances, jumping to a 2-0 lead then scoring four unanswered goals to start the second half. Senior Yassine Mohamed scored a pair of goals for Dover, which also got scores from senior Dawson Vandonge, junior AB Gomez-Sanchez, sophomore Gavin Burrier, senior Cayden Escusa and freshman Zain Mohamed. The Tornadoes outshot Steubenville 19-7. 

Girls soccer

The Tornadoes were a solid 4-2 overall, 1-2 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference after beating New Philadelphia 2-0 last week in their only outing. They were set to face Wooster on the road Sept. 11. Senior Cashlyn Harmon and freshman Anna Klaserner scored the goals in the victory over the Quakers. Harmon lifted her season total to four scores. Klaserner’s was her second score of the year. Heading into the week, senior Miley Patton led Dover with four assists. Harmon had three.
