Dover swim teams post strong results in double-dual meets

The boys team beat Lake 70-56 and Marietta 72-44. The girls team beat Marietta 82-43 while falling 96-55 to Lake.

Dover’s swim teams won three of four dual matches in a three-team double-dual meet Dec. 26. The boys team beat Lake 70-56 and Marietta 72-44. The girls team beat Marietta 82-43 while falling 96-55 to Lake.

Winners for the boys team included the 200 medley relay team of juniors Evan Dorenkott and Danny Peltz, senior Thomas Perkowski and sophomore Tanis Handerhan; Perkowski in the 200 freestyle; Handerhan in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle; Dorenkott in the 100 backstroke; and the 400 free relay team of junior Kelvin Flores-Martinez; Elmer Ortiz-Ortiz; Peltz and Dorenkott. 

The girls got wins from Sara Cotlet in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke;, junior Teagan Hill in the 500 freestyle; and the 400 free relay team of Cotlet, Hill, Ruth Cotlet and junior Abigail Lane. 

Before the break, Dover swept rival New Philadelphia. The Tornado boys won 70-44, with the girls squad winning 86-34. 

For the girls, wins came from junior MaKenna Cole (200 and 500 free), Ruth Cotlet (200 IM, 100 fly) and Sara Cotlet (100 breaststroke). The girls’ relay of Hill, Lane, Cotlet and Cotlet wonthe 200 medley and 200 free relays. Megan Flores-Martinez, Josie Blacka, Jennifer Sanchez Brito and Lilly McCoury teamed to win the 400 free relay. 

Winning for the boys were Handerhan (200 free, 100 fly), Dorenkott (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Perkowski (50 and 100 free) and Flores-Martinez (500 free), The boys’ 200 medley relay of Peltz, Dorenkott, Handerhan and Flores-Martinez won, as did the 200 free relay of Handerhan, Flores-Martinez, Peltz and Perkowski. The 400 free relay team of Perkowski, Flores-Martinez, Pelts and Dorenkott also won.

Winning for the Quaker girls were freshman Bailey Tidrick (50 and 100 free) and senior Adalia VanArsdalen (100 back). Junior Jacob Haren (100 back) was New Philadelphia’s lone boy to win.

Girls basketball

Before the break, New Philadelphia lost for the first time this season falling 54-37 to Wooster in an Ohio Cardinal Conference contest. The loss snapped a six-game win streak to start the season. The Quakers bounced back nicely from that with wins over Lexington (47-27) and Marlington (48-25). Aubrie Wells led the way with 11 points against Lexington, with Katelyn Mamula and Khloe Sours adding 10 and 8, respectively. Wells scored 17 to lead the way. Sours added 12 and Keira Mason chipped in 8.

Boys basketball 

New Philadelphia was 5-3 heading into its Dec. 30 meeting with Zainesville. The Quakers started 4-1 before a couple of heartbreakers, 49-48 in overtime at home against Wooster and 37-34 at Dover. Reid Wells had 18 points and five assists in the loss to Wooster. Robbie Copple led Dover with 12 points. Gavin Van Horn added 11 and Luke Leggett scored 9. The Quakers got 10 from Jackson Martini.

Wrestling

New Philadelphia finished seventh among 17 teams in the Canton South Invitational Dec. 27. Kyle Beaber was runner-up at 113 pounds; Daniel Ayers placed sixth at 120; Kevin Bell Dinza finished sixth at 126; Evvan Torchik finished fifth at 132; Camden Richardson finished third at 138; and Zayne Kozelka finished fifth at 175.

Dover finished ninth in a 28-team field at the Coshocton to start the winter break. Frank Ramirez was runner-up at 106; Brock Reynolds placed third at 113; Paris Ellis finished fifth at 138; and Patrick Moran finished fourth at 157;
