Dover Public Library launches fall programming Sept. 6
The Dover Public Library will kick off its fall programming Sept. 6 with the Reading Dragon Kickoff Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Children’s Programming Specialist Chris Metzger said kids can discover which Dragon Keeper team they belong to and earn stars for their team by completing a scavenger hunt. Kids who design a dragon scale for a mural in the children’s department will receive a special holographic card. They can also make dragon bookmarks, enjoy snacks, and enter a drawing for the Dragon Masters book set 1-5 by Tracey West.
The Dragon Card program was created by Dover librarians Mallory Thompson and Liz Strauss and is now used across the United States and internationally. “Mallory has been contacted by libraries in New Zealand and recently Scotland to use the dragon card program,” said Jen Gardner, children’s department manager.
Dragon cards track children’s reading and reward them with collectible cards, which can also be used in a game similar to rock, paper, scissors. Dover hosts at least two dragon events each year, where kids play for prizes and create dragon-themed crafts.
Storytimes will return Sept. 10, 17 and 24 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Lego Builders will meet on the second Wednesday of each month, beginning Sept. 10 at 4:30 p.m. Wacky Wednesdays return Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. with a project to sew a plush ornament. Each month will feature a different activity, ranging from crafts to STEAM projects.
Homework Help, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will also resume Sept. 9. Teachers will provide tutoring for students in kindergarten through fifth grade Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Reservations are required.
