Teen Services Manager Liz Strauss with last year’s edition of Tornado Alley, available at the Dover Public Library.Submitted
Teens in grades six through 12 are invited to submit original writing and artwork to Dover Public Library for a chance to be published in the library’s teen literary magazine, Tornado Alley.
Submission forms are available at the library, at Dover High School and online. The deadline is Feb. 28. Teens may also apply to serve as editors, assisting with selecting works, designing the magazine and planning the annual reception. For more information, contact the library at 330-343-6123.
Any teen living in Tuscarawas County may submit up to four pieces for consideration. Categories include fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and art. Written submissions must be typed. Art submissions must be 8.5-by-11-inch color copies or photographs of the work. All submissions must include a title. Submissions will also be accepted by email. Full guidelines are listed on the submission form.
Each year, teen editors, guided by Liz Strauss, Dover Public Library teen services manager, review submissions and select pieces for publication. Works are selected based on grammar, style, creativity and content.
The magazine is funded by a 21st Century Afterschool Learning Grant with Dover High School, which supports learning opportunities outside the classroom. The grant also supports equipment housed in the library’s Maker Lounge, including 3D printing pens and button machines.
“Last year, we introduced a new format and style to Tornado Alley, thanks to one of our teen senior editors,” Strauss said. “This year, I’m excited to see what other creative ideas our teens come up with to continue this project.”
