Claymont’s girls basketball team improved to 7-4 on the season, reaching that mark at the midway point with a 54-44 non-league win at Harrison Central Dec. 27. Ava Edwards led the way with 21 points, scoring all 14 of her team’s points in the fourth quarter to keep Harrison at bay. The Mustangs took a 12-6 lead after a period and gradually extended it over the next two quarters. Aubree Cottrell added a career-high 14 points to the victory.
Claymont’s seven victories are significant in that they matched the Mustangs total for the entire 2024-25 season.
The Mustangs boys started the season quickly, reeling off five consecutive wins before dropping a pair, 43-39 to Ridgewood and 70-56 to Tuslaw. They bounced back with a 43-41 win at Indian Creek to move to 6-2 on the year, 4-1 in games decided by 4 or fewer points.
Boys basketball
Indian Valley was 4-2 heading into a Dec. 30 showdown against Tusky Valley. After a 3-0 start, the Braves dropped two of three, including a 74-72 thriller at home against Watkins Memorial Dec. 27. That loss stopped an eight-game home win streak dating to last season. Newcomerstown was off to a 2-6 start but snapped a six-game losing streak Dec. 23 with a 53-41 win at East Canton.
Girls basketball

Newcomerstown got off to a nice 5-2 start before back-to-back losses to East Canton and Cincinnati Roger Bacon on either side of Christmas. The Trojans were 5-4 overall but 3-1 in the Inter-Valley Conference with league games Dec. 29 and Jan. 3 at Strasburg and at home against Tuscarawas Central Catholic, respectively.
Indian Valley took a 3-6 record into its Dec. 29 non-league game at New Philadelphia. The Braves had lost 4-of-5 prior to that and were 1-3 in IVC play.
Wrestling
Indian Valley Red finished third among 28 teams at the Coshocton Classic on Dec. 20. The Braves finished with 252 points, trailing Garaway A (402.5) and Martins Ferry (343.5). Claymont finished 19th with 100 points, while Indian Valley’s blue team placed 23rd with 59.
For Indian Valley Red, Bodie Raymond was runner-up at 113 points; Brock Albright was fifth at 126; Owen Ayers finished fourth at 132; Boston Braun finished second at 144; Brett O’Connor finished sixth at 150; Roan Piccin placed seventh at 157; Arian Braun finished fifth at 165; Bradley Barr placed third at 175; and Cruz Gardner placed ninth at 285. For the Blue squad, Xavier Holland placed ninth at 113 and Collin Swisham placed 10th at 190.
For Claymont, Clint Mello placed sixth at 113; Troy Mills placed sixth at 132 and LauvensjiMarc placed fifth at 190.
