Lear introduces Ohio Self-Defense Act to expand legal protections for lawful gun owners
Proposed bill aims to reinforce stand-your-ground laws and shield citizens from prosecution and lawsuits when acting in self-defense.
State Rep. Beth Lear (R-Galena) is introducing the Ohio Self-Defense Act.
The legislation strengthens Ohio’s self-defense laws including stand-your-ground to make certain responsible citizens are never targeted by politically motivated prosecutors or dragged into costly, baseless lawsuits for acting to defend themselves in a moment of danger. The bill sets a clear pretrial process to stop unjust cases before they begin, reinforces civil immunity for lawful defenders and makes it clear Ohio stands with those who refuse to be victimized.
The Ohio Self-Defense Act also recognizes the importance of deterrence, affirming the lawful display of a firearm or a defensive warning is protected conduct under state law. It demands higher standards of proof from prosecutors and ensures the burden of evidence lies where it belongs: with the government, not the citizen.
Lear’s proposal draws a line between responsible self-defense and criminal behavior. The measure does not protect those engaged in violent crime including attacks on law enforcement, but it firmly shields citizens who act in good faith to protect innocent life.
As a proven conservative and a candidate for the Ohio State Senate, Lear has built a record of standing up for liberty, life and the Constitution. She has fought for parental rights, fiscal responsibility and the Second Amendment.
