Coshocton library explores fairy tale history
Event delves into origins and enduring appeal of classic stories
The Coshocton County District Library presented Tales as Old as Time: A History of Fairy Tales Feb. 25 in the large meeting room at the library.
"Fairy tales are the first stories we tell to younger children," adult services coordinator Lasha Philabaum said. "Fairy tales are the first stories we learn and the oldest stories we tell. But what are fairy tales? Where did they come from and why can’t we stop retelling them over and over?"
A fairy tale is defined as a story typically for children that involves fantastic forces and beings. A fairy tale is a type of story that features magic, supernatural elements, fantastical creatures, kingdoms, forests, castles, and places beyond ordinary reality where villains are punished and heroes are rewarded. Many conclude with the iconic “happily ever after.”
