From the FPS archives: Carrollton’s Taylor Fair advances to district tennis tournament

Look back at local highlights from 1965 to 2015, including homecoming queens, county fairs and championship wins

Carrollton sophomore Taylor Fair won the East District girls tennis sectionals at Dover and advanced to the district tournament at Ohio University in Athens.

60 YEARS AGO 

From 1965 FPS Files 

Dale Eick and Jane Brooks, both 18, were recognized as Carroll County’s Outstanding 4-H Boy and Girl at the 1965 county fair. 

Beverly Rogers was crowned Carrollton High School’s homecoming queen. 

Elsie Magee celebrated her 90th birthday while tending Magee’s Hardware in Dellroy, where it was founded by Magee’s father, C.B. Scott, and her brother-in-law, Douglas H. Hunter, under the name of Scott & Hunter in 1896. 

The Carrollton Warriors picked up their fourth win of the season by defeating Cadiz 20-0 under the leadership of quarterbacks Dick Tinlin and Bill Carpenter. 

50 YEARS AGO 

From 1975 FPS Files 

Carolyn Huffman reigned as Carrollton High School’s 1975 homecoming queen. 

The Carrollton Standard Printing Co. and The Free Press Standard were sold to Maynard A. Buck of Cadiz. 

Tom Mesler was named president of the Carroll County Firemen’s Association. 

Tammy Carnes reigned as Malvern High School’s 1975 homecoming queen. 

40 YEARS AGO

An estimated 500 people packed St. John’s Villa gymnasium to hear Gov. Richard F. Celeste boast about Ohio’s “five best-kept secrets.” 

Five candidates were vying for three seats on the Minerva Local Board of Education, including newcomers Forrest Kail Jr. and Rebecca L. Watring, along with incumbents John H. Milliken, Fred Monhemius and Wendell H. Smith. 

Jill Lewton reigned as Carrollton High School’s 1985 homecoming queen. 

Carrollton’s Tim Bright was pictured attacking a West Branch ball carrier. 

30 YEARS AGO 

From 1995 FPS Files 

Algonquin Mill Fall Festival volunteers Helen Shepherd, Genevieve Tinlin, Chris Ossler and Michele Rutledge were pictured preparing items for the 25th annual festival. 

Craig Brooks and Sarah Weyand were named Students of the Month at Carrollton High School, where both were seniors. 

The regular season ended for Carrollton’s golfers with a 169-180 win over Louisville at Carroll Meadows. 

20 YEARS AGO 

From 2005 FPS Files 

Sara JoAnn Bodle was crowned Carrollton High School’s 2005 homecoming queen. 

Inducted into the Carrollton High School Alumni Hall of Fame were Gilbert Brooks, the late J. Wendel Herron, Kenneth L. Morckel and Mary Lou (Snively) Theil. 

Carrollton quarterback Matt Bryan and his teammates picked up their fifth win of the season with a 28-13 victory over Marlington. 

10 YEARS AGO 

From 2015 FPS Files 

Richard Giroux was hired as a part-time village administrator at Malvern. 

The five CHS seniors vying for the queen’s crown included Sierra Baker, Maygen Bales, Kaitlyn Budinsky, Kady Davis and Eliza Days.
