It's never a good sign when the officials throw for the most yards, but that was the case in a penalty-filled season opener for the Carrollton Warriors, who dropped a 23-12 contest to the visiting East Liverpool Potters as holding, offsides and unsportsmanlike calls caused flags to fly all over the field.

Carrollton coach Storm Hill, though, knows the Warriors were their own worst enemy.

“Too many opportunities we had in the red zone not scoring, making turnovers and not enough explosive plays is just a recipe to not win a football game,” Hill said after the game. “We give East Liverpool credit. They had a lot of returners up front. You could see that in the second quarter, they started wearing on us with a more experienced offensive line. I’m going to learn from this and do a better job making sure they’re prepared.”

The Warriors were in the red zone twice in the first quarter but did not reach paydirt, although sophomore kicker Paycen Haven booted a pair of field goals to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Carrollton's Isaac Husted (10) is off and running in the Warriors' 23-12 loss Aug. 22 to East Liverpool. Husted had 91 yards on 5 catches.

Midway through the second quarter, East Liverpool quarterback Ben Myers threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Dre-Keim Abercrombie, but the Warriors'  Nolan Deitrich blocked the extra point, leaving the teams tied 6-6 at halftime.

The second half started ominously for Carrollton, which fumbled the second-half kickoff, leading to the Potters' go-ahead score.

After a Warrior touchdown by Levi Kiko was brought back due to a holding call, quarterback Hunter Allison passed to Issac Husted for a 46-yard gain, bringing up first down on the EL 12. On third down on the 8-yard line, Allison scored on a keeper, but the 2-point try failed. On the ensuing kickoff, Tamar Tisdale burned 98 yards for the Potters and the teams battled through a scoreless fourth quarter.

Carrollton will try to get on the winning track Friday at Edison, which hammered Shenendoah 35-14 in its opener.

“We are going to have a tough match again," Hill said. "All our focus has to be on beating Edison and correcting these mistakes from tonight.”
