Bowerston Community Women’s Club plans holiday events, honors veterans
Members discuss banner project expansion, Halloween trunk or treat, and return of Christmas in the Park celebration Dec. 6.
At the October meeting of the Bowerston Community Women’s Club, members discussed the newly erected veterans banners in the village.
Debbie Carrothers, who coordinated the project for the club, said she has received many comments and suggestions since the banners were hung. Banners will be rotated annually, with an effort made to accommodate personal placement requests.
Carrothers shared that she had been contacted by an individual who was appreciative of the project and pledged funds to help any veteran who may not have family nearby or who might need financial assistance to obtain a banner. The club agreed to reach out to local American Legion posts to help identify veterans in need. Anyone aware of a veteran who could benefit is encouraged to contact Carrothers directly.
Carrothers also expressed her gratitude to Micheal and Derrik Warner for installing the brackets and hanging the banners. She said the project will continue, with additional banners to be added as they are purchased.
The group also discussed plans for the upcoming Halloween celebration. This year, the Village of Bowerston, in partnership with the Fire Department and the Women’s Club, will host a trunk or treat event.
Main Street will close at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, to allow for setup and decoration of vehicles and tables. All residents are welcome to participate. Trunk or treat will not replace traditional trick or treat, which will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Residents passing out candy from their homes are asked to leave their porch lights on.
The club also began planning for the return of the village’s Christmas in the Park event, which has not been held since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will take place Saturday, Dec. 6, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the community park building. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served, and children will have the opportunity to share their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus.
The group decided to discontinue the coloring contest featured in past years. Treasurer Kim Willoughby suggested giving each child a ticket for a drawing for gift cards instead. She also noted that she has contacted a local photographer to be present at the event.
More information will be available after the club’s next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Trinity Church.
