Fifty mayors attended a dinner meeting of the Northern District of the Village Mayors Association at the K and P Hall in Malvern. They included Mayor Robert Wells of Malvern and Mayor William Simms of Minerva.
Scott C. Reese, 62, president of The Scio Pottery Co., died of an apparent heart attack.
50 years ago (1976)
“Compliment” was the winning word Ray Cole, a sixth-grade student at Carrollton School, spelled to win the Carroll County regional spelling bee.
Harry Horstman, principal at Dellroy School since 1969, was hired as assistant director of the joint vocational school at New Philadelphia. Phil Keener, vocational agriculture instructor at Carrollton High School, was hired to teach farm management at the vocational school.
Hornet wrestler Jerry Wilhelm was Malvern’s only entry in the Class A state wrestling tournament, where he placed fourth.

40 years ago (1986)
Carrollton’s economic future got a boost when the Burdman brothers of Girard leased 15 acres along state Route 43 at the north edge of town. They planned to develop a shopping center beginning with the construction of an Ames department store.
A Carrollton native who “always had time to help somebody else” received the Carrollton Civic Club’s (formerly Carrollton Jaycees) Distinguished Service Award at a banquet at Atwood Lake Resort. Sean R. H. Smith was named the recipient.
Thomas Shearer of Wooster was named superintendent for the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities program in Carroll County.
Gary Chaddock of Minerva claimed third place in the Class AAA 132-pound weight class at the state wrestling tournament.
30 years ago (1996)
Earning party nominations in the 1996 primary election were Larry Garner, Democrat for county commissioner; Janet Unkefer and Mark Slabaugh, both Republicans, for county clerk of courts and county commissioner, respectively.
Carrollton’s four-person debate team, coached by Cheryl Chek, placed third in the state tournament. Team members were freshman Erin Dray, sophomore Kristy Houyouse, junior Mike Sowko and senior Katie Atwood.
The Malvern Hornets knocked off the No. 4 team, Wheelersburg, with a 70-66 win in the regional semifinals.

Bill and Bonnie Newell, son and daughter of the late Robert C. “Bob” Newell, took over the family business their father built over 60 years, Newell Realty and Auctions LLC.
Longtime HARCATUS board member Beulah McFarland of Carrollton was honored for serving 40 years on the HARCATUS board and for her leadership in the construction of the Friendship Center at the Carroll County Fairgrounds.
Receiving special awards at the Carrollton girls basketball team’s postseason banquet were Amanda Bryan, Katy Fox and Katie Rummell.

John Traxler, serving as pro tem mayor of Leesville, was appointed mayor. John Baer was appointed to fill Traxler’s vacant seat on Leesville Council.
Cast members for the Carrollton High School production of Little Women included Celia Meek, Sarah Wilsford, Elizabeth Domer, Sierra Baker and Anna Turman.
Ali Poole of Carrollton (Division II) and Sara Loomis of Malvern (Division IV) were both named second-team girls basketball All-Ohioans in their respective divisions.
