Stephenson honored with regional service award
The award recognizes her longtime commitment to expanding access to justice
Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio recently presented Elizabeth Stephenson with its 2025 Regional Award for Excellent Service by an Individual, recognizing her longtime commitment to expanding access to justice.
For Stephenson, service is a family tradition. Continuing a legal legacy that dates to 1887, she has dedicated her career to helping individuals and strengthening her community. A native of New Philadelphia, Stephenson began her legal career in 1989 at her family’s law firm and later served as court administrator of the Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court General Division from 1997 until her retirement in 2024.
Throughout her career, Stephenson focused on making the legal system more accessible, particularly for people navigating domestic relations matters without an attorney. She helped develop and improve court forms and processes, allowing more people to access the help they need.
In retirement, Stephenson continues that work through pro bono service with LASCO, volunteering twice a month to assist clients with domestic relations issues and court forms.
“It keeps me connected to people who need legal help and allows me to continue using my skills in a meaningful way,” she said.
“Stephenson has been a steady and compassionate force in our community for decades,” said Mike Harrington, managing attorney of LASCO’s New Philadelphia office. “Her deep knowledge of the court system and her willingness to continue serving others in retirement make her an invaluable resource to our clients and a true example of what it means to give back.”
Stephenson encouraged others in the legal profession to get involved.
“Our services are so needed and can help change lives,” she said.
LASCO said Stephenson’s work reflects her enduring commitment to justice and continued service to people in need.
