Members of the Rotary Club of New Philadelphia are preparing to unveil the 2025 edition of Story Book Lane, the beloved holiday display of 24 nursery rhyme characters and verse boards that has delighted children and families since 1956.
For the past 23 years, Story Book Lane has been maintained by members of the Rotary Club of New Philadelphia. Thanks to the club’s long-term commitment and the generosity of hundreds of sponsors and Friends of Story Book Lane, the 24 nursery rhyme characters have been rebuilt and animated.
After many years leading the Story Book Lane project, Rotarian Tom Police has retired from his role, passing leadership to fellow Rotarian Taylor McCartney of New Philadelphia. McCartney announced that two new nursery rhyme characters will debut when the display opens for the holiday season in November at Tuscora Park.
“Working with artist Greg Scott, we have finished new character boards for Mary Had a Little Lamb and Tom Tom the Piper’s Son,” McCartney said. “This completes the restoration and replacement of all 24 Story Book Lane characters that were first built nearly 70 years ago.”
Story Book Lane originated in 1956 as a neighborhood project on East High Avenue, created by Victor Marsh. When nightly traffic jams became an issue, the display was moved to Tuscora Park. At the request of Marsh’s daughter, Elly Kirk, the Rotary Club of New Philadelphia agreed to restore and maintain the colorful character boards.
McCartney leads a committee of Rotary members and family volunteers, including her husband, parents, aunt and uncle, to continue the project’s upkeep.
“I grew up visiting Story Book Lane every year since I was a little girl,” McCartney said. “I am honored and grateful to lead the ongoing effort to keep this wonderful Christmas tradition alive for future generations of children and families to enjoy.”
Community support continues to fund repairs, character replacements, verse boards and lighting for the display.
“We always welcome additions to the Friends of Story Book Lane Board,” McCartney said. “A $100 donation places your name on the Friends Board for three years. This 69-year-long, deeply loved community tradition is made possible by your generous support.”
