Rainbow Connection pledges $125,000 for inclusive playground at Tuscora Park
Funding supports poured rubber surface to improve accessibility; construction expected to begin after Labor Day.
The Tuscarawas Society for Children & Adults Inc., better known as Rainbow Connection, has pledged $125,000 toward the installation of an accessible ground surface at the new inclusive playground at Tuscora Park.
“Playground surfaces like mulch create barriers for those with physical disabilities,” said Perci Garner, executive director of Rainbow Connection. “Poured rubber surfaces ensure that all children and their guardians can safely enjoy the playground regardless of their age, size, or ability level. We’re excited for Tuscarawas County residents and visitors to enjoy this new upgrade to one of our county’s most beloved parks.”
Rainbow Connection’s contribution is supported in part by a grant from the American Electric Power Foundation, awarded in December 2024. The foundation provides funding for projects that benefit communities within its service territory.
The playground initiative is led by New Philadelphia High School teacher Preston Cornell in partnership with the Tuscora Park Foundation. Construction is scheduled to begin after Labor Day, with the facility expected to open next summer. The foundation has raised $376,000 of the $460,000 needed to complete the project. Donations may be made to the Tuscora Park Foundation, re: Playground, 161 Tuscora Ave. NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663, or at tuscoraparkfoundation.com.
According to the project’s Facebook page, the playground will feature wheelchair-accessible swings, slides, sensory play zones, inclusive games and poured rubber surfacing to ensure universal participation.
In addition to supporting the playground, Rainbow Connection’s board also approved $45,000 in assistance to individuals, schools and organizations at its August meeting. The nonprofit, an independent 501(c)(3) health charity, provides help to disabled and disadvantaged residents of Tuscarawas County.
