Making a run for it
New Philadelphia sweeps boys and girls cross country titles to advance to regionals
Quaker boys place four in top six and girls edge Dover in tight finish as both teams qualify for Pickerington regional.
As expected, New Philadelphia’s boys cross country team shined brightly last Saturday at the Cambridge Division II cross country meet. Not do be outdone, The Quaker girls also took home a team championship and will head to Pickerington this weekend for regional competition.
The Quaker boys had four of the top six finishers, which was good enough to hold off runner-up and rival Dover, 28-35, in the six-team field.
Winner the individual title was New Philadelphia senior Marcus Adelman, whose time of 16:34 was 20 seconds faster than Dover senior Chase Danial. Following Danel were Quaker seniors Alec Adelman and Kyle Beaber, and junior Kevin Smith.
Juniors Branson Pringle and Austin Pringle finished 17th and 25th, respectively, for the Quakers. Freshman Luke Rotunno rounded out the squad with a 33rd-place finish. There were 44 runners in the field overall.
New Philadelphia’s girls team also won a close race with Dover, eking out a 37-39 win. Not far behind was Tri-Valley with 45.
The Quakers had their five scorers all within the top 11 finishers. That group was led by junior Kyle Smith, whose time of 20:35 trailed only individual champ Erin Hogue of Tri-Valley’s 19:51.
Other scorers for New Philadelphia were senior Katlyn Dougherty (fifth place), sophomore Kamri Patterson (ninth), senior Faith Swaldo (12th) and freshman Katelyn Beaber (11th). Junior Devlin Herrington (18th) also competed in the 28-girl field.
Boys soccer
Coming off an 8-0 win over Carrolton in their season opener, the No. 4 seed Quakers were set to face No. 1 John Glenn in an Oct. 21 district semifinal. The winner was to take on either No. 2 Dover or No. 5 Zanesville in the district final Oct. 23.
Volleyball
In that was not unexpected, the Quaker saw their season come to an end with a straight-sets loss to top-seeded and state-ranked Dover Oct. 15. Fourth-seeded New Philadelphia, which topped Zanesville to get into the sectional final against the Tornadoes, finished 10-17. The Quakers fell by a 25-13, 25-17, 25-14 count in the tournament loss to Dover, their third defeat against the rival Tornadoes this season.
