Dover athletes excel across fall sports slate

Tornadoes advance golfers to districts, extend volleyball streak, and post strong showings in soccer and cross country

Sophie Wicker shot an 86 in Division I sectional competition at Eagle Sticks Golf Club Sept. 22, which was good for the final individual district berth, which went to the top three individuals not on a qualifying team. Wicker advanced to the Lancaster District tourney, to be held this week. 

Dover’s girls team competed finished fourth in the nine-team field. The Tornadoes’ 376 left them seven shots short of the third and final district-qualifying spot, held by John Glenn. Tatum Tylkeshot 89, Livie Hamilton 93, Sydney McCabe 108 and Rebekah Fockler 125 for the Tornadoes.

Gauge Stingel, Austin Levengood and the rest of Dover’s boys golf team were set to tee it up Sept. 24, weather permitting, at the Eagle Sticks Division I Sectional, which also featured teams from New Philadelphia, Tri-Valley, Steubenville and Carrollton.

Volleyball

The Tornadoes ran a modest win streak to three matches with a pair of league victories, a straight-set triumph at home against West Holmes Sept. 18 and a 3-1 win at Lexington two days later. The pair of wins lifted Dover’s overall record to 12-2, but 8-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference, one game back of Wooster. After a non-league trip to Indian Valley Sept. 23, the Tornadoes were set to host Wooster Sept. 25, with the OCC title hanging in the balance. Against West Holmes, Dover rolled 25-8, 25-11, 25-7, led by seven kills from junior Alli Hupp, four aces each from seniors Hailey Kuecher and Caroline Hanner, and three from senior Kelsey Kazelman, and 24 assists from senior Quinsey Werntz. Against Lexington, which Dover beat 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, senior Jenna Molk led with 18 kills. Hanner added 14 to go with four blocks. Werntz had a team-best four aces. Kuecher had six blocks to lead the team. Senior Chera Schmidt led with 16 digs and Werntz had 41 assists. Dover sat at No. 10 in the Division III state coaches poll. Wooster was not ranked in Division II. 

Soccer

Dover’s girls squad split a pair of matches, beating John Glenn 2-1 in a non-league tilt and dropping a 1-0 decision to Lexington in OCC play. The Tornadoes moved to 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the OCC with those results. Cashlyn Harmon and Bridget McCrate scored for the Tornadoes. The boys team had an unbeaten week, beating John Glenn 3-0 before tying Lexington 1-1 to move to 5-5-1 on the season, but 0-4 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. A Sept. 23 match at Mansfield Senior presented a good chance to get in the league win column. 

Cross country

In the boys Red race at the Malone AX Night Invitational at Malone University Sept. 20, Dover’s Chase Daniel finished in sixth place overall, crossing in 16:28.15, less than a minute off the winning pace of Waynedale’s Jackson Varner. Daniel’s pace qualified as a Mile Split Elite Performance and led the Tornadoes to a fifth-place finish among 14 teams. Tyler Shuss finished 36th for the Tornadoes. Hunter Anslow placed 42nd, Tony Pastor-Calel 48th, and Elijah Perlaky51st to round out Dover’s scoring runners. A total of 140 entrants finished the race. Bethany Hutchinson finished 30th to lead Dover in the girls Red race. She finished in 21:56.38. Others scoring for the Tornadoes were Cassidy McKee (34th), Addie Hindman (44th), Ella Kitchen (58th) and Lyela Miller (59th). They were among a 115-runner field. The girls team finished 11th in a 15-team field.
