More than 30 football players and coaches attended the first meeting of the 4th and 1 Bible Study and Leadership Group Oct. 29 at ProVia in Strasburg.

Athletes represented schools from Strasburg, Malvern, Garaway and Sandy Valley local school districts. Adam Haught and Curtis Metzger, assistant football coaches at Malvern, delivered a message on leadership and making positive choices. They explained that 4th and 1 represents a moment when much is expected — a time to step up and give your best.

Metzger said the concept was created when the Malvern football team faced challenges and the coaches needed to refocus the players. “We are in week 11 of the football season, so we must be doing something right. Be proud,” Metzger told the athletes.

Haught encouraged the students to keep the group growing and to invite others to future meetings.

Tim Haverstock, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Canton and former Malone University basketball chaplain, served as guest speaker. He shared his personal story of faith and transformation, telling the group, “We need to invest ourselves. As humans, we screw up so much, but after much sorrow and sadness I changed my life. Before your parents ever got together, God knew you.”

Haverstock reminded the athletes that disappointment is part of both sports and life. “Someone lets you down. You’re not getting to play, but you continue to go to practice,” he said. “Some players become great in life and some never get much playing time. Sometimes coaches are wrong and make mistakes. Continue to work hard and encourage the rest of your team — you will stand out.”

He added, “In life, you decide to work hard, work all your life, and then we retire. What matters is what you do with the time in between.”

The next meeting of the 4th and 1 Bible Study and Leadership Group will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at ProVia in Strasburg. All athletes — from any sport, including girls — are invited to attend. Meetings are planned once a month.
