Garaway dominates Mineral Ridge, advances in Division VI playoffs
Frey scores four touchdowns in Pirates’ 49-7 rout; boys cross country team earns 19th place at state with Palmer named All-Ohio.
The seventh-seeded Garaway football team rolled to a 49-7 win over No. 10 Mineral Ridge in Division VI Region 21 first-round action Oct. 31 at Garaway High School.
Matthew Frey rushed for 169 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries to lead the Pirates (9-2), who advanced to play at No. 2 Crestview (10-0) in a regional quarterfinal Nov. 7.
Grady Miller finished 10-of-14 passing for 242 yards and three touchdowns — tossing two scoring strikes to Micah Yoder (three catches, 121 yards) and a 15-yarder to Colson Kuemerle — while adding 45 yards on the ground.
Trey Miller (67 yards) and Jaxon Garber (39) both had three catches.
Boys cross country
Garaway finished 19th at the Div. IV state tournament Nov. 1 at Fortress Obetz.
Nic Palmer led the Pirates with a 48th-place finish in 16:43.54, earning All-Ohio honors. Carter Travis placed 58th in 16:51.51, Dominic Schlabach 158th in 18:04.25, Aaron Asbury 160th in 18:05.40 and Bryce Johnson 177th in 18:29.71 to round out the scoring.
