Lake Center Christian returns to state behind dominant pitching
Coblentz throws four-hit shutout as Tigers claim Division VI regional title; area track athletes shine at state meet
For Lake Center Christian baseball, the road back to the state tournament featured exactly two ingredients: dominant pitching and an offense that showed up right when it needed to.
The Tigers punched their ticket back to Akron on June 4, defeating Chippewa 4-0 in the Division VI regional championship game at Louisville High School. The victory secured Lake Center Christian's second consecutive trip to the state tournament and gave the program its fourth regional title in the past five seasons.
As has often been the case this spring, Grant Coblentz was the star of the show.
The junior left-hander delivered a masterpiece, throwing a complete-game four-hit shutout while striking out 15 batters and walking none. Four different innings ended with Chippewa hitters trudging back to the dugout after a quick one-two-three frame. By the final out, Coblentz had piled up enough strikeouts to make the Chipps (20-10) wonder whether they had accidentally shown up to a pitching clinic instead of a regional final.
Lake Center broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Luke Heckert opened the frame with a triple before Nathan Bryant drove in the game's first run with a deep fly ball. Colton Smilek followed with another RBI, and Brayden Myers doubled before Jacob Rainieri singled home the third run of the inning. Suddenly, a tense pitchers' duel had become a comfortable Tigers lead.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth when Coblentz doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Caleb Shelly infield single. Myers finished with a double, a single and an RBI. Rainieri contributed two hits and an RBI, while Coblentz helped his own cause with a double and a single. Heckert, Shelly, Bryant, Smilek and Paul Dussel also contributed key hits as Lake Center improved to 23-4-1.
The championship game came one day after the Tigers survived a tougher challenge from LaBrae (20-6) in a Division VI regional semifinal on June 3.
Lake Center out-hit the Vikings 13-4 on the way to a 9-6 victory. Caleb Shelly provided the biggest swing of the afternoon with a two-run home run, while Colton Smilek collected three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Nathan Bryant added three singles and an RBI, and Brayden Myers contributed two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Track and field
While the Tigers were busy earning another state tournament berth, athletes from Lake, Marlington and Lake Center Christian were competing against Ohio's best at the OHSAA Jesse Owens Track and Field State Championships, held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium from June 4-7.
For Lake, freshman Rennick Darrah turned in an outstanding weekend in the seated division, earning three fourth-place finishes while recording personal bests in every event. Darrah placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 22.65 seconds, fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:39.41 and fourth in the shot put with a throw of 18 feet, 6 inches.
Junior Andrew Vensel accounted for all of Lake's Division II team points by placing sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:16.05. Justin Landes narrowly missed the podium in discus, finishing ninth with a throw of 161-3, while Kaitlyn Josef represented the Lake girls by placing 16th in the long jump at 16-5 1/4.
Marlington's Irelyn Johnson once again proved she belongs among Ohio's elite distance runners. The junior placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 4:55.69 before returning to finish third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:36.09. Johnson was responsible for all nine of the Dukes' team points.
The Marlington girls 4x800-meter relay team of Brin Boyce, Carissa Miller, Kari Smith and Johnson also competed at state, finishing 15th in 9:54.33.
Lake Center Christian's lone state qualifier, senior Gianna Ritchie, closed her remarkable career with a runner-up finish in the Division V 800-meter run. Ritchie crossed the finish line in 2:13.46 to earn second place in the state and cap another outstanding postseason run.
