The caller tells residents they have a warrant for their arrest and asks them to either pay bond over the phone with a credit card or turn themselves in to law enforcement.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers pretending to be deputies.

According to the sheriff’s office, citizens have reported receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office. The caller ID shows the sheriff’s office phone number. The caller tells residents they have a warrant for their arrest and asks them to either pay bond over the phone with a credit card or turn themselves in to law enforcement.

Officials said the calls are a scam and warned residents not to provide personal information over the phone to the impostors.

The sheriff’s office said that if someone has a real warrant for arrest, deputies will not call and ask for bond payment over the phone using a credit card. A real arrest warrant must be served in person before bond can be posted.

“If you have a real warrant for your arrest, we are not going to call and ask you to pay your bond over the phone using a credit card,” the sheriff’s office said. “A real arrest warrant must be served in person before bond can be posted. In other words … We will come to you, not call you.”

Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to notify the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office at 740-942-2197.
