Harrison Central softball splits week, sweeps Bellaire

Playing on the East Liverpool football field was no problem for the Harrison Central softball team April 13, as the Huskies pounded out 16 hits, including three doubles, in an 11-0 victory.

Mikayla Pelegreen led the attack with two doubles. Lillian Thomas, Kara Blackburn and Kam Crothers also added doubles. Blackburn collected four hits, while Pelegreen had three and Crothers and Thomas each added two. Blackburn drove in four runs, Crothers had three RBIs and Pelegreen added two.

Pelegreen earned the win in the circle, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 12.

Harrison Central traveled to Brooke April 16 and, despite outhitting the Bruins 9-8, fell 7-4. Thomas and Emma Jarvis each had two hits, including doubles. Denali Stull, Blackburn and Bailey Smith also doubled. Pelegreen took the loss, striking out five and issuing four walks. The Huskies committed four errors.

The Huskies returned to West Virginia April 17 and dropped a 7-2 decision to Weir High. Harrison Central managed three hits and committed five errors. Senior Jaylin Ward led the offense with a triple and two RBIs. Pelegreen took the loss, with six of Weir’s seven runs unearned.

In the opener, the Huskies earned a 2-1 win. After trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Harrison Central tied the game with a run in the bottom half and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth. The Huskies finished with seven hits, led by Denali Stull’s two singles.

Pelegreen earned the win, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out 12. Harrison Central committed five errors.

In the second game, Harrison Central broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning. Bellaire scored twice in the fifth, but the Huskies answered with three runs in the bottom half and held on for a 7-3 win.

Ward had three hits, while Stull and Pelegreen each had two, with Pelegreen adding a triple. Maddie Johnson earned the win, allowing nine hits and striking out three. Harrison Central did not record a strikeout at the plate.

The junior varsity team also saw action. The Huskies lost to Bellaire 8-7 in eight innings April 15, then defeated Brooke 8-1 in a three-inning game April 16.
