The Lady Huskies will open their 2025 girls soccer season Aug. 21 on the
road against Beaver Local. The Dogs lost five seniors to graduation last year:
Lily Gibbons, Avri Puskarich, Vanessa Dowdle, Zoe Williamson and Kendal
Hercules. This year’s team consists of 15 members — one freshman, four
sophomores, six juniors and four seniors. The seniors providing leadership for
the team are Grace Miller, Hayden Bittenger, Emma Patterson and Leanna Scott.
The Huskies, under Coach Mindy Madzia, have
several new players. Madzia is proud of the effort, listening and striving to
improve and to understand the aspects of the game they put forth. “Effort is
something you can’t coach,” said Madzia. She has six returning lettermen.
Emma Patterson, Grace Miller and Lillianne
Smith will be captains. “Their leadership is outstanding. They have put in
their work. They are very positive. They are very uplifting and help with the
underclassmen,” said Madzia.
Lillianne Smith will take over Vanessa
Dowdle’s role as goalie. “She filled in for Vanessa Dowdle when Vanessa had
concussions last year. I am very confident in her ability,” said Madzia. “We had a scrimmage against Big Red the other
night. I think this was a good thing with the new girls to soccer, getting them
to understand the game situation. The last two practices we have just built off
that scrimmage. We have totally broken down positions to better our defense, to
help the forwards to get the ball to where it needs to go. We have returners
who are solid and can help, showing leadership.”
Madzia is assisted by Meghan Scholl. Entering
their fourth season side by side, “We work well together,” said Madzia.
