Grace United Methodist Church is approaching a significant milestone. Following the devastating fire May 20, 2022, caused by a lightning strike that ravaged the historic sanctuary, the congregation is hopeful to return to worship in its newly rebuilt sanctuary early in the new year.

The fire, which destroyed the roof and caused extensive damage to the sanctuary, chapel, parlor, conference room and fellowship hall, left the congregation without a physical home. In the aftermath the community rallied together, offering support and temporary worship spaces. Since June 2022, Grace UMC has been holding services at the nearby Presbyterian Church, maintaining its spiritual gatherings and community outreach programs.

Restoration efforts have been comprehensive. The church has undergone significant repairs including replacing the roof and rafters, and new plumbing and electrical systems have been installed along with a new HVAC system. Additional work in the coming months includes continued placement of drywall, painting and carpeting.

The congregation is especially excited about the design that has been created for the new stained-glass windows and the increased functionality of having the fellowship hall on the same level as the sanctuary.

Rev. Deb Quillen expressed gratitude for the community’s support, emphasizing how deeply the church has felt the impact of every prayer and gesture of kindness.

“We want to thank the community for their prayers and their outpouring that continues to this day," she said. "The journey to rebuild is not easy and has been a long process, and those prayers have helped to keep us strong."

The church has been especially moved by the messages received from other congregations, a testament to the unity and compassion that define the broader faith community.

As the restoration nears completion, the congregation hopes to return to its sanctuary by early next year.
