Jared's Ice Cream opens in downtown Coshocton
New Main Street shop offers 32 flavors and local favorites like peanut butter
Jared’s Ice Cream opened on Main Street April 23, and just three days later, owner Jared Michael was ordering more ice cream.
“I started with 24 flavors of ice cream, and we sold 20 tubs in three days,” he said. “When I called to order more, I ordered 32 flavors.”
His shop is selling Hershey’s ice cream, and he ordered flavors that aren’t easily found in local stores.
“Coshocton loves peanut butter, so I ordered three different options with peanut butter,” Michael said.
Michael said he worked in an ice cream shop when he was in high school and really enjoyed the experience.
“Most of the time when people come for ice cream, they are in a good mood, maybe celebrating a special occasion. Getting ice cream is just a joyous experience,” he said.
Besides ice cream, Jared’s Ice Cream also has a food menu that includes items such as sloppy joes, coneys, shredded chicken, egg salad, chicken salad and nachos.
“When I first advertised sloppy joes, someone told me Coshocton is known as the place who first advertised sloppy joes,” Michael said.
An ad for the sandwich appeared in a 1944 edition of the Coshocton Tribune.
“I enjoy seeing customers come in, and we have some regulars already. They like to try new flavors of ice cream,” Michael said. “I want the shop to have a fun, relaxing atmosphere.”
Michael said he has been lucky in finding great employees to work for him. “And my sister Erika helps a lot after school,” he said. She’s a teacher for Coshocton City Schools.
Michael also said the support from other Main Street and downtown businesses has been wonderful.
“Dean’s Jewelry sent us flowers, and Hannah Marie’s brought cupcakes. And everyone has been stopping in,” Michael said. “I just want to thank the Coshocton community for their support. We’ve had such a good turnout and really haven’t advertised beyond Facebook.”
Jared’s is located at 514 Main St. and is open from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. They are closed Mondays. The shop phone number is 740-295-9115.
