Something new is coming to the Coshocton County Fair
on Monday, Sept. 29. A Weiner Dog Derby will be held after the
harness races. Harness races will start at 4 p.m., so Steve Aronhalt, organizer of
the weiner dog races, said he is planning for the races to start from 7:30-8 p.m.
“The races are in collaboration with the Ohio Harness
Horseman’s Association, and there are actually 11 fairs participating in the
circuit, with Coshocton being one of them,” Aronhalt said.
Each fair runs its derby the same day as one of its harness racing days. “In addition to the
Weiner Dog Derby, we will have multiple giveaways from the generous donations
from area businesses during the harness racing,” Aronhalt said.
Aronhalt said the dogs will race in heat races with
the top finishers in the championship race.
“The first-place winner will
receive $300, a trophy and a miniature sash, similar to the Kentucky Derby Run
for the Roses winner. Ours will be a dachshund-sized red carnation sash.
Second place will receive $200, and third place $100. All dogs who enter will
receive a doggie swag bag with goodies from area businesses,” Aronhalt said.
There is no entry fee for the Weiner Dog Derby. Up to
40 dogs can register to compete.
“Registration is on the Coshocton County Fair
Facebook page, and one can register by clicking the live link. If people need
assistance, they can stop into the fair board office during regular business
hours for support,” Aronhalt said.
Registration also is available on the Coshocton County Fair
website. Visit www.coshoctoncountyfair.org.
